Admirably written

Really is a book of gems, whether about riding in a high-rollin truck to remembering a father's voice reading Alice in Wonderland and having it carry through when she goes down her own rabbit hole. I wanted 100 more little stories. Keep an eye on this gal.

Micro-fictions, flash-memoirs, prose poems, incidents, anecdotes, extended metaphors--there's no differentiation on the book's part, nor is there much need, as most of the pieces are glittering little truths whether factual or not. What you want from a jewelry box is interest--of form, color, texture, history, personal meaning, delight, the sense of life itself cut multifaceted from rock, or at least made plastic. What you want is the feeling that handling these pieces was time was well spent. It most definitely is.

To be clear: this is not a guide on how to write a book (Keyes covered that in his last volume, The Courage to Write). Rather, it's a tool for writers who have found their courage and now need hope: that their work is good, that it will be published despite the inevitable rejections, that readers will actually buy it. "Frustration is the natural habitat of writers at every level," writes Keyes, a trustee of the Antioch Writers' Workshop, and his goal here is to lead writers out of the darkness of despair and into the light of reassurance. Keyes offers useful advice on coping with "discouragers" (they "can be dispatched by understanding their motives and by putting them to work as goads"); "exorcising excuses" ("I have no talent"); and "rites of rejection." He introduces writers to the strange habits of the "publishing tribe" (they are, he says, slaves to the opinion of their peers), and offers many anecdotes from the experiences of A-list writers such as Ann Patchett and Tony Hillerman. Encouraging and Informative

Keyes does a great job presenting the case for finding hope in the writing process. This book specifically discusses: dealing with anxiety, frustration and despair, overcoming the discouragers in your life, exorcising excuses for not writing and pursuing a career in writing, the rites of rejection, the nature of publishers and editors, and how to keep hope alive.

Years ago I had a basketball coach who taught "if you're not getting at least four fouls in a game, you're not playing defense." He didn't like fouls, but his point was, in the process of playing the game aggressively, fouls are going to happen. Fouls are not necessarily indicators of defeat, they are indicators of effort. Likewise, Keyes' approach to rejection is that all successful writers deal with rejection. In his book he provides numerous examples, including Nobel and Pulitzer prize winners, of authors who face rejection even after winning critical acclaim. Rejection is a fact of life, Keyes say, learn to deal with it. Easily stated, but it still hurts. According to Keyes, writers who have not experienced rejection are not sending out enough material; and, writers who don't learn to accept rejection as part of the writing process, are doomed to quit writing altogether.

Keyes is the author of another book titled "The Courage to Write," which I highly recommend. Similar books by other authors which I would also recommend for the aspiring writer include: "On Becoming a Novelist," by John Gardner, and "The Forest for the Trees," by Betsy Lerner.

Ron Atkins is the author of two children's books, Abby and the Bicycle Caper, and his upcoming (January 2005) Abby and the Bike Race Mystery.

A new lease on my writing life

I've read enough self-help and inspirational books, and books about writing, to last a lifetime, so when I spied The Writer's Book of Hope at my public library, I hesitated. But the title caught my eye, and I ended up gulping it down it in a few sessions. I'm glad I did-it's given me a new perspective on my writing practice. I've learned that frustration, cluelessness, and despair are a normal part of the writing process. And while I still encounter the same writing problems I did before, I'm more easygoing about them. It's as if I've adopted a new attitude: "So I'm clueness at the moment-that's OK, it will pass." I'm much more at ease and confident of my abilities, and I've developed a broader perspective on the writing process-all of which is increasing my productivity and enjoyment at my typewriter.
The book is clearly the result of a lot of research. (Check out the photos on Keyes' Web site showing the yards of file cabinets in his house.) Keyes doesn't trot out the tired authors' anecdotes that we've all heard before; he serves up a host of tidbits that were new to me. The quotes by masters (such as Tolstoy) about their lack of "talent" are alone worth the price of the book. I also appreciated Keyes' no-nonsense tone. I was expecting New Age warmth and fuzziness, but Keyes pulls no punches. Take his observation that some people who give up writing do so not because they lack talent, but because they are uncomfortable spending long periods alone. That's not a "nice" thing to say, but it's truthful and important to know.
The Writer's Book of Hope delivers on its promise. It provides practical hope and inspiration to writers based on a clear-eyed view of the writing profession. It gave me a new lease on my writing life.

This terrific book gives a clear, concise, easy-to-follow blueprint to infuse genuine feeling feeling into your work and then recreate it in a dependable way. To some these techniques may seem like child's play, and they are, in a very profound sense, with a sound scientific basis. I believe any actor, whether novice or expert, who practices these techniques will become a better, more confident performer.

What a terrific book! Any actor, would-be actor, or friend of an actor looking for an excellent book on the craft should snap this one up. New ways of looking at acting are difficult to find. Nike Flacks' experience as both a trained therapist and a superb actor give her unique insights into acting and emotion not addressed anywhere else. If you can't make it to New York, London, or Paris for one of her workshops this book is the next best thing to help you act with passion.

I'm a big fan of Skal's work and was excited when this book was released. I started reading it and kept thinking to myself that it sounded pretty familiar. I flipped through the pages and sure enough, the book mentions that it's a republication of Skal's "Death Makes a Holiday: A Cultural History of Halloween." I wish that this had been mentioned before I bought this. That being said, if you haven't read "Death Makes a Holiday: A Cultural History of Halloween" and love Halloween, definitely pick this up...it's a very enjoyable read!

For those of us who are Halloween lovers, this book is magnificent. It contains wonderful information about Halloween past & present as well as a treasure trove of Halloween information that is both informative and trivial.

David does a great job of thoroughly covering information about classic Halloween movies. If I made any suggestion, it would be to include details about the great Halloween books such as "The Halloween Tree" and "The Legend of Decimus Croome: A Halloween Carol." Otherwise, Mr. Skal's book is a must-read for Halloween fanatics.

Very solid introduction to bucktailling tactics

I found this book to be a solid introduction to bucktailing tactics and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about these classic lures. John Skinner's style is engaging and clear which makes it a lot of fun to read and very informative. Additionally, his videos on Youtube are a great extra and really do help to drive home the points that he's making in his book.

I do not live where I can pursue striped bass, bluefish or fluke which are the principle species covered in this book, so, while I found it very helpful overall I am still left with some specific questions related to the fish which I primarily fish for (trevally, snappers and groupers). I came to understand through this book that bucktailing is mainly about controlling a few variables in order to keep your lure in the strikezone for the species you are pursuing. I was expecting bucktailing to be more about jigging the lure and less about swimming the lure so that was a bit of a revelation for me. I am not yet sure how well my local species respond to swimming the lure but I know a great deal more about what it takes to keep the bucktail in the strike zone than I knew previously.

To sum it up, this is an excellent resource and is almost certainly a five star book if you live in the Northeastern United States and can try these tactics as written. For everyone else fishing bucktails in saltwater it is a very solid book which can help to introduce you to the subtleties and possibilities of these classic lures.

Just got into fishing with bucktails and picked this book up on a whim. First night out I catch a Striper using the techniques described in this book. Awesome! I am now hooked. Pick up this book, it is a winner.
