Very helpful for WRTR users

When I was using Writing Road to Reading (WRTR) in my homeschool, I needed something to plan out the lessons for me. Having tried and sold Reading Works (which many people love), I moved on to this. It was great. It gave me written out lessons for every day (four days a week) for each of my three kids (who were at three different levels).

WRTR for Dummies!

If you're looking for a no nonsense way to get into the Writing Road to Reading, this is a perfect book. Laid out in practical steps with sections for beginners and olders, you will find just the information you need to make WRTR work. Day by day lesson plans and goal setting to help keep you moving along are included.

Though the author makes the comment that this is used with a particular curriculum, this is no way interferes with the practical use of the material.

Brian De Palma (b. 1940) isn't your average Hollywood director.

For years he reigned as the "master of the macabre," the man who massacred the class of '76 in Carrie and stalked Angie Dickinson in Dressed to Kill. By the mid-1980s De Palma found himself assaulting his audience and critics, daring them to watch a chainsaw enter a man's skull in Scarface and a power drill disembowel a defenseless woman in Body Double.

What drove De Palma to such extremes? In the late 1960s, he wanted to be the next Jean-Luc Godard and revolutionize American cinema. Instead, he found himself ostracized when Warner Bros. removed him from Get to Know Your Rabbit, his first Hollywood feature. De Palma sought the refuge of Alfred Hitchcock until the late 1970s (Sisters, Obsession), when his surreal approach to horror became a genre unto itself (Carrie, The Fury, Dressed to Kill). Ironically, just as De Palma achieved the success that his fellow Movie Brats George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg had enjoyed since the mid-1970s, he could not hide his resentment toward Hollywood. After battling with the MPAA in the 1980s, he gradually became part of the mainstream with the success of The Untouchables and Mission: Impossible, although he never suppressed his desire to make audiences aware of his camera-eye and his dark, penetrating worldview.

Brian De Palma: Interviews follows De Palma's fortunes as he makes the difficult transition from underground filmmaker to celebrity auteur. In profiles and q&a interviews, he emerges as a fascinating figure of excess and ambivalence. De Palma is not afraid to share his opinions about censorship, violence, feminism, American culture, and the fate of cinema in the twenty-first century.

Although he will probably forever be most closely associated with the horror movies Carrie and The Fury, which put him on Hollywood's map, DePalma started out as a Godard-wanna-be in Greetings and Hi Mom, low-budget, politically conscious films starring a young Robert DeNiro, and has since directed everything from by-the-numbers blockbusters (Mission: Impossible) to bloated gangster flicks (Scarface, The Untouchables). Despite his eclecticism, he remains tainted by his reputation for violent misogyny (he cast his then-wife, Nancy Allen, as a prostitute in three consecutive films), the blatant Hitchcock rip-offs that characterized his early work, and the notorious megaflop Bonfire of the Vanities, which derailed his career in the early '90s. These 19 interviews, drawn from major publications such as the New York Times and Esquire, specialty film publications, and even Web sites, don't shy away from the controversies surrounding DePalma's work. By turns evasive and confessional, the director voices his bitterness about Hollywood despite the fact that he has played the system cannily, making commercial blockbusters to get the green light for smaller, self-written efforts. Interviews to Kill

This collection of interviews of Brian De Palma, the celebrated filmmaker, reads as an insightful window into the world of filmmaking--not only in the 1970's and 80's, but up till the 2000's where many view his film career to have reached a lull (some consider it to have occurred before this date). However, that is not a detriment with this collection, in fact I found that the book was great, going from interview to interview, each conducted as a new film was coming out (i.e., one for Sisters, one for Phantom of the Paradise, one for Carrie..so on and so forth).

While this book may seem dated since it's last interview was around the time Mission to Mars debuted, it really isn't. Look at Truffaut's interviews with Hitchcock, as relevant as ever. However, if you are looking for a newer interview with the great De Palma, you can purchase the Criterion's DVD or BluRay copy of De Palma's masterpiece, Blow Out, which includes an hour long interview conducted by Noah Baumbach recorded in 2010 or 2011, which serves as nice companion piece to this collection.

I enjoyed reading this, and if you love the films of De Palma...or even if you don't, it will give you perhaps a better understanding of who the man is and the way he thinks. I recommend this book. Highly.

Great collection of interviews

Brian de Palma is my favorite director and this book reprints several interviews done at different points of his career. He comes off, not surprisingly, as a very intelligent man and offers insightful remarks about his movies, directing, and cinematic art in general. It's interesting to see how his perspective over some of his films varies throughout the years. Recommended to all fans. Also, I can say the only other book I've read about De Palma with similar quality to this one is the interviews by Blumenfeld & Vauchaud, which you should also get.

This is an excellent survey of interviews with De Palma over the years, and they prove a helpful guide for navigating his cinema and his interests (no wonder that Chris Dumas' UN-AMERICAN PSYCHO is so beholden to these interviews). A must-read for any De Palma fan.

About the Author

Saving our marriage

I bought this book in combination with Asperger Syndrome and Long-Term Relationships, to try to save my marriage that had fallen apart. This book so far has really Helped! it gives exercises for you to use for commuication with your spouse.We make a date every Sunday we will go to lake , park and take turns reading and discussing.So far this has been a GREAT BOOK! WITH REAL HELP! Will review more when were through right now were on the 3rd exersice, the first didn't do to well not for him but worked great with my kids. I't gives you a color chart to attach emotions to , Like for me white means Im open to conversation or questions. brown means I have alot on my mind I can't pay attention right now. Since Aspies have a hard time reading body language this really help intrupting me when im busy and so on. Great book! real help!

Disappointed

We didn't find this book particularly helpful to us. I have to assume it was designed for people with more severe Asperger's than what we are dealing with. We felt much of the book was patronizing, and few of the skills provided in the book were really helpful to us. I am sure some couples could really benefit from this, but I feel like we needed something geared towards a much higher functioning couple.

This book has a few good points, but overall the author misses the fact ...

This book has a few good points, but overall the author misses the fact that while she is talking about why people don't think for themselves, and she gives examples from her own life experience, pointing out how government agencies are resistant to change, the agencies she's worked in, by her own admission, were full of progressives. Yet, she constantly points to the Republicans as having a lot of flaws, while mentioning that the progressives have a few challenges but neglecting to notice that they have as many flaws as the Republicans, and that the progressives/Democrats tend to lie to their constituents as well. I read this book thinking she may give a fresh, unbiased insight into these current problems facing the USA, but instead, according to her, it's the Republicans fault. While the Republicans certainly deserve credit for the messes they've created, she isn't thinking for herself in this book, but repeating party line politics, which shows she has very little of her own thought. I was disappointed as I was expecting a fresh insight into a pressing problem in American politics and thought. On the thought side (outside of political discussions), a few good points were made. I would not recommend this book.

How to think out of the box, from someone firmly inside one. The author makes astute observations, and writes multiple pages with intuitive clarity, then verges off course with slightly relevant side observations that are very distracting. As I began reading, I went from being intrigued, to bemused then finally annoyed by this book. The most interesting thing I observed was how the author goes to great length in describing how today's society, especially the Conservative USA society, are dogmatic, tribal to an extreme, regemented in the box thinkers, this from a self professed "Progressive" writer who throughout the book, demonstrates the very characteristics she is critical of in others. The book has value, many of the ideas are great and should be explored further, but the author may benefit from spending more time utilizing the "introspective" analysis that she recommends for others.

Outstanding

Richard Armitage brings Hamlet alive in a way that I can vividly see everything lay out before me. I've done theater in the past and seen Hamlet numerous times on stage (and yes, Mel Gibson's movie role in Hamlet) but Armitage brings a quality with his soothing and penetrating voice that I've never heard before. He's an actor without a doubt. I highly recommend this!!! PLease put it on audio CD soon!! I would love to play this for my friends.

Hamlet, well-told

I just finished listening to this audiobook. It’s surprisingly well-written and, of course, magnificently performed by Armitage.

You’d think that Hamlet would be done to death by now, but these writers managed to bring something fresh and very engaging to the table. Hamlet, although definitely still a brooding character, feels a lot less like a navel-gazer and a lot more like a caged lion, brooding only because he has not yet figured out how to sink his teeth into his prey. Every character is well-drawn, including the clever new device of expanding Yorick into a main character with often-hilarious, biting dialogue. By the time the final scene occurred, bathed in blood as usual, I was twisted up inside with all of the individual characters’ desperations and I could see the whole thing happening not as some giant farcical tragedy but as a set of unavoidable forces all crashing into each other, each person hurting inside and out.

Armitage’s beautiful voice and excellent acting can redeem even a story as tedious as A Convenient Marriage, but thankfully he had such good subject matter to work with here that the dark richness of his natural tone is the perfect means to convey the inner workings of an ancient castle and the simmering hatred of a wronged prince. Armitage slipped easily from accent to accent, high-born and low-born, native and foreigner, male and female, comic and tragic, old and young. It was often easy to forget that one man was speaking all the lines, and instead I saw a young woman or an old lord in my mind’s eye without the slightest effort.

If you haven’t listened to this audiobook—even if you normally don’t listen to audiobooks—you should go listen to this one.

Good story, phenomenal narrator!

I will be honest, I had never read the original Hamlet before. So I was going into this completely blind (which may be good because I had an open mind to it). The story, itself, was very good and kept me wondering. I do believe that Yorick was my favorite character. I found myself longing for Hamlet and Ophelia.

However, I must say (since it was an audio version I was 'reading'), the narrator truly sold this for me. Richard Armitage did an amazing job of making me feel like there were numerous narrators, not just one man behind a microphone. Even when it came to the women in the story, he was able to manipulate his voice and change his accent.

Best book of 2015 so far!

I very rarely give five stars unless a work completely sucks me in, keeps me engaged and blows me away, and for the first 50% of this book, I knew I was giving it 5 stars. Where it lost that fifth star was in the last 40%.

Baylor Mitchell is the antithesis of every person, every female, in Gavin McBride's world. He comes from old Texas money and she comes from a salt-of-the-earth family of hardworking American Dream earners. When they (and their worlds) collide on a college campus, it sets off a beautifully-written and enchanting love story. The romance blossomed in a natural progression, with plenty of sweet/cute moments, laugh out loud moments, and plenty of moments of raw passion.

As admitted in the Book Description, the couple is torn apart by a lie and the second half of the tale is about the couple reclaiming their long lost love.

The first part of the book is written entirely from Gavin's POV, and the author's handling of it was clever and believable, with humor reminiscent of the book Tangled. The constant "dick twitching" was just a tad excessive, but again - it's from the male POV so is likely spot on. :)

I absolutely loved watching Baylor and Gavin fall in love. I loved watching that love transform him, and I kept holding my breath, waiting for "the lie" that tore them apart. The problem with "the lie" when it came was that the author had developed such a strong, sure bond and relationship between the hero and heroine that it seemed unbelievable that they would instantly turn from thinking the world of each other to thinking the worst. And with a villain so obvious as well. But new adults don't always make the wisest of choices.

The reconciliation in the second half is pretty swift and, therefore, the book could have been wrapped up around the 60-70% mark, in my opinion. I'm not saying that the last 40% of the book wasn't entertaining. It was just a little irrelevant and seemed more like just a bunch of stuff happening.

When you fall in love with a story and you get that feeling of "I wish it would never end," it's always a treat when the author takes you a bit beyond that moment of the HEA. For me, the last 40% of the book took us beyond the moment we knew the H/h would be together forever. It just took us a little too far beyond it until I really did want it to end. Not in a bad way. I still always loved the characters, but it got to a point of "okay - I'm ready for closure now."

Now that I've given my criticism, I must follow it up by saying that this is the best book I've read this year, and quite possibly the best in the last 7 months. Samantha Christy is a writer who I fully expect to transcend the indie sphere. Her talent deserves it, and I will be picking up her other books, for sure. In her Acknowledgments, she thanked her betas for helping her put out a book that could rival a traditionally-published novel, and she is absolutely right. It could.

Without hesitation, I recommend this book 100%.

Amazing doesn't even begin to cover Samantha Christy's Purple Orchids. I saw the book last night while perusing my kindle unlimited options and the first review I saw said something lie "Best book I've read in 2015." That review is the truth. I've read hundreds of books and although there have been many that stand out, Purple Orchids is the best book I have read to date. My stomach had butterflies and my chest pinched from reading the narrator's words. I highly recommend Purple Orchids and I am downloading another Samantha Christy book as I type! Great read!

Love this book!

I love, love love this book. It’s one of those books where everything is just right. The story starts of in the present where we meet Gavin. From his point of view we also get the story of his past where he meets Baylor. The way these two come together and build their relationship is a lot of fun to read. It’s just impossible to not fall in love with them. I enjoyed the pace of the book and i liked how the pov alternated just a few times but definitely at the right times.

I read this book in two days and when i wasn't reading it (a girl has got to work sometimes) i was thinking about it.
The only bad part was that it had to end. Luckily Samantha gave us a little teaser to expect another book with one of the side characters. That made me feel a little better because I really had a hard time saying goodbye to Gavin & Baylor. I’m hoping to get a glimpse of them in the next book.

Be My Reason was my first introduction to the wonderful writing of Samantha Christy and even though it’s my least favorite out of all 4 of her books, her writing is just amazing and i knew right away i had to read more books by her. Finding Purple Orchids was such a wonderful surprise, i love stumbling on little gems like this. It’s hands down one of my favorite books of 2015 and i will read it again soon. Everything just works and all the little things come together in an effortless, beautiful and big way.

Please, please don’t hesitate to read Purple Orchids. It’s one of those books you won’t be able to put down. So be ready to smile, giggle, feel, cry and fall in love with both Gavin and Baylor and most definitely Samantha Christy’s writing. I sure did.

It explained things in a different way which really helped for parts that I didn't understand after reading my normal textbook and lecture notes. "Think of this as travel writing of the highest order. A rough journey for mankind becomes a stimulating armchair adventure for the reader. This is big history, framed by big ideas but anchored in the very recent explosion of knowledge about climate through the ages and about our history and prehistory. Brooke skillfully navigates the interpretive hazards of proxy paleoclimate data. In Brooke's persuasive account, our evolution to modernity is not absolutely determined by climate and disease, but it has been substantially influenced by them. About the Author
John L. Brooke is Humanities Distinguished Professor of History at Ohio State University, where he also directs the Center for Historical Research. His books include Columbia Rising: Civil Life on the Upper Hudson from the Revolution to the Age of Jackson (2010), which won the Best Book Prize from the Society of the Historians of the Early American Republic; The Heart of the Commonwealth: Society and Political Culture in Worcester County Massachusetts, 1713-1861 (Cambridge, 1994), which won the Merle Curti Award for Intellectual History from the Organization of American Historians; and The Refiner's Fire: The Making of Mormon Cosmology, 1644-1844 (Cambridge, 1989), which won the Bancroft Prize for American History. He has held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Antiquarian Society and the Harvard Charles Warren Center.

A Rather Amazing Synthesis of Knowledge!

Excellent synthesis of current knowledge of MANY aspects of science that are all too often viewed separately. John L. Brooke has written a work that draws together modern understanding of genetics/epigenetics, plate tectonics, climate change, punctuated evolutionary thought and far more in a manner that makes sense. While not "dumbed down" it is not written above the level of educated readers with general knowledge in search of more and how things interconnect. It is in the synthesis of concepts and their interconnecting aspects and feedback loops that Brooke shines. While not 'light' reading Brooke did not "write an Ambien".
What might have ended up being the rantings of somebody of lesser talent come across as a synthesis of scientific current understanding.

Excellent history

This volume is "big history" and "global history" at its best. Fully versed in both biological and hard sciences, historian John Brooke presents a masterful overview of the history of humankind from its beginning several million years ago to the present day. Throughout, Brooke illustrates the importance of climate changes in bringing about (indeed forcing) basic alterations in how people worldwide have lived. In very readable prose Brooke discusses how specific climate alterations deeply influenced the development of different types of human cultures over time. Part 1 of this volume analyzes the evolution of earth sytems from the formation of Earth about 4.6 billion years ago, and what those systems meant for living plants and creatures, through the development and global spread modern humankind. Part 2 examines the domestication of plants and animals, the development of agriculture, and the rise of state governments. Part 3 looks at ancient and medieval societies, and Part 4 examines human societies since about 1400 AD. Brooke stresses that climate changes and variabilities shaped human cultures until very recently. Only since the onset of industrialization has the relationship, Brooke shows, been reversed, with human actions shaping climate. Brooke's volume is essential for anyone interested in the course of history and current events--an enjoyable and valuable read.
