About the Author

Steve Russo is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at Cornell University and the Director of Organic Laboratories. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor at Indiana University. While there, he designed and implemented a state-of-the-art computer resource center for the undergraduate chemistry curriculum. He received his B.S. in chemistry from St. Francis College and his Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry from Cornell University. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and has been a recipient of the Dupont Teaching Award, Clark Teaching Award, and the Amoco Distinguished Teaching Award.

Mike Silver is a Professor of Chemistry at Hope College. He received his B.S. in chemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University and his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Cornell University. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, past president of the West Michigan Section, and a member of the Council of Undergraduate Research. He has received the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award for excellence in teaching and research and the Provost's Award for Teaching Excellence. Currently he is involved in collaborative research with the Dow Corning Chemical Company.

In my experience, this is one of the few chemistry textbooks which explains WHY as opposed to simply presenting isolated formulas and factoids for students to memorize. It is terrific for visual-spatial learners and for students who want the big picture as well as the details. The organization of the textbook is logical, with one subject leading into the next.

This heartbreaking, bracingly unsentimental debut describes in poetic detail the travails of a Japanese family living in an internment camp during World War II, raising the specter of wartime injustice in bone-chilling fashion. After a woman whose husband was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy sees notices posted around her neighborhood in Berkeley instructing Japanese residents to evacuate, she moves with her son and daughter to an internment camp, abruptly severing her ties with her community. The next three years are spent in filthy, cramped and impersonal lodgings as the family is shuttled from one camp to another. They return to Berkeley after the war to a home that has been ravaged by vandals; it takes time for them to adjust to life outside the camps and to come to terms with the hostility they face. When the children's father re-enters the book, he is more of a symbol than a character, reduced to a husk by interrogation and abuse. The novel never strays into melodrama-Otsuka describes the family's everyday life in Berkeley and the pitiful objects that define their world in the camp with admirable restraint and modesty. Events are viewed from numerous characters' points of view, and the different perspectives are defined by distinctive, lyrically simple observations. The novel's honesty and matter-of-fact tone in the face of inconceivable injustice are the source of its power. Anger only comes to the fore during the last segment, when the father is allowed to tell his story-but even here, Otsuka keeps rage neatly bound up, luminous beneath the dazzling surface of her novel.

Otsuka researched historical sources and her own grandparents' experiences as background for this spare yet poignant first novel about the ordeal of a Japanese family sent to an internment camp during World War II. Its perspective shifts among different family members as the story unfolds. We see the mother numbly pack up the family's middle-class belongings to leave behind in their Berkeley home. The dehumanizing train trip to the camp, and the bleak internment in the alkaline Nevada desert, as related by the young son and daughter, become mythic events. Their father, picked up for questioning immediately after Pearl Harbor and imprisoned throughout the war, returns a broken and bitter man. The family's humiliation continues beyond the war's end: after returning to their vandalized home, they are shunned for months by former friends and neighbors. The novel's themes of freedom and banishment are especially important as we see civil liberties threatened during the current war on terrorism. Otsuka's clear, elegant prose makes these themes accessible to a range of reading levels from young adult on. Highly recommended for all libraries.

There is no doubt that the internment camps are a stain on the history of the United States. I grew up during the war in Canada, where the Japanese were transferred inland, but not interred. They became a valuable part of our community, and our friends. They were hard working and kind and gentle, but never did I hear bitterness from them, although their losses were large.
I felt the suffering of the whole family in Julie Otsuka's book about the experience of her mother,and I was made more aware of the injustices they felt. The hardest to bear seemed to be the separation from their father. Hopefully, this book will help us not ever repeat solutions like the internment of innocent Americans of any descent.

Beautiful Sorrow

This was one of the most beautifully sorrowful books I've ever read. I can't even imagine what it was like for thousands of Japanese-Americans during WWII. Families who had made this their home, who were neighbors and friends, forced to leave their homes for years and never know if it would still be there when they came back. Or if they would even come back. No apologies, and things were lost that could never be given back. Vivid emotions of joy and sorrow dance across the pages of this book and an exquisite warning to not repeat the mistakes we've already made.

As writer and readers, they recreate and relive the crushing pain of dispossession, abandonment and exclusion. Their world is a distorted polarity of what ought to be in life. Members of this universe ask themselves the question of how people can endure historical pain: genuine hurt of the here and now whose roots are tangled in the soil of prejudice, repression and complicity.
To this body of literature may now be added Julie Otsuka's incandescent "When the Emperor Was Divine." This spare, elegant and wrenching debut novel is destined to become a classic in any serious examination of the impact of the forced removal and relocation of over 110,000 Japanese and Japanese-Americans during World War II. Otsuka's nameless protagonist family becomes representative, not only of the agonizing, degrading and damaging impact of racism but also of assault on racial identity. Their "crime," Otsuka explains, is their being "too short, too dark, too ugly, too proud." Who are they? "I'm the one you call Jap ... Nip ... Slits ... Slopes ... Yellowbelly. .. Gook." Through the lens of Otsuka's analysis, the Japanese-Americans suffered the dual curse of invisibility and ubiquity. Their very insignificance led to their perceived danger; their complete assimilation proved their insidious disloyalty. From this cauldron of psychological terrorization can only come horrible results. Shame. Apology for being. Bewildered submission. Denial. Rejection.
By not permitting readers to know the names of the mother, father, son and daughter of her representative family, by enforcing a sense of anonymity, Otsuka creates a world of detached, impersonal horror, magnified by terribly real, painful, particular detail. The author's terse, precise and understated language intensifies imagery, metaphor and symbol. Even Otsuka's use of prepositional phrases shimmers. Topaz Relocation Camp is a city "of tar paper barracks behind a barbed wire fence on a dusty alkaline plain high up in the desert." Staccato one-sentence paragraphs hammer home the essence of this assualt on "time and space:" "No Japs allowed to travel..." or "No Japs out after eight p.m." In Otsuka's hands, the single-word epithet "Jap" embodies every indignity, slight and attack the Issei and Nisei faced.
Symbolism in "Emperor" is subtle, unobtrusive and compelling. The mother's willed euthanasia of a milkey-eyed, disregarded neighborhood dog foreshadows and intensifies her husband's abrupt disappearance and demise. Otsuka forces us to listen to the son's recitation of "My country, 'tis of thee" and the pledge of allegiance against the backdrop of incessant dust -- which creates its own unwelcomed bur irreversible scrim of shame. How could it ever be possible to come clean from this unbidden dirt, this grimy degradation? We are forced to witness the silent erosion of family coherence through obligatory meals in communal mess halls where Japanese customs are indelicately ignored. No painful detail escapes Otsuka's eyes, not even the distasteful practice of foods touching each other on dinner plates. Topaz is not only geographically sterile, but existentially barren. When asked what he had done one winter day, the boy responds, "Licked a stamp."
As necessary and brilliant as "When the Emperor Was Divine" is, it walks a dangerous line. Julie Otsuka's insistence on her family's anonymity risks that readers may not be able to identify and understand her protagonists' circumstances and pain. Namelessness risks distance, and distancing imperils connection. Yet because she takes that risk, her novel is even a greater triumph. "When the Emperor Was Divine" honors memory and invites reflection. It presents us with the greatest weapon available to fight oppression: an informed heart, one fashioned by exposure to wrong and an understanding of wrong's imapct.

About the Author
ARTHUR RANSOME was born in Leeds in 1884. He had an adventurous life -- as a baby he was carried by his father to the top of the Old Man of Coniston, a peak that is 2,276 ft high! He went to Russia in 1913 to study folklore and in 1914, at the start of World War I he became a foreign correspondent for the "Daily News." In 1917 when the Russian Revolution began he became a journalist and was a special correspondent of the "Guardian." He played chess with Lenin and married Trotsky's personal secretary, Evgenia Petrovna Shelepina. On his return to England, he bought a cottage near Windermere in the Lake District and began writing children's stories. He published the first of his children's classics, the twelve Swallows and Amazons books, in 1930. In 1936 he won the first ever Carnegie Medal for his book, "Pigeon Post." He died in 1967.

A Children's book for Adults

One one level, the Arthur Ransome books are about children, sailing and the idyllic summers in England in the 1930's. But on a more important level they're about responsibility; the responsibility to honor your commitments, to protect your siblings and to measure up. We Didn't Mean to go to Sea is the best of the lot; a story that starts easily and then builds slowly to a terrifying physical and mental ordeal. The last part, the return from Holland, is the best Father/Son scene you will ever read. I can't say enough about Ransome in general, or this book in particular. No, I can say one more thing. Don't start with this one; start with Swallows and Amazons. Start at the beginning. You'll get here eventually and you'll be really, really glad you did.

Another wonderful adventure!

Once again another great story. I think as I read it carefully this time I appreciate even more Ransome's technique of capturing the inner thoughts of the children. I've read it several times: as a child, to my children and now as I start to think about grandchildren.
The Walker children are growing up. John steps up to take responsibility and make hard decisions in this book and we realize it is nearly a year or two from university now. Responsible Susan makes her self sick with worry and I wonder if she has taken on too much responsibility over the years. Titty, once again, hovers between growing up and staying the child and takes the steps into maturity here. Roger has matured perhaps the most. He focused on the instructions about the boat engine and is a hero saving them from disaster while the gas holds out. Did Ransome develop the boys characters more as the storm clouds loomed in Europe? Are the girls roles less focused as war neared? I'd never noticed it before.
Any reviewer thought the trip home was poorly written and lost focus. It didn't for me. I felt the children each received the validation they deserved from their adventure and won't say more and spoil it for you.
It's the 7th in the series and I highly recommend reading them in order.

great book, great story

For my money, this is one of the great sailing stories of our times. It is beautifully written, as only the English can write, and tells a tale that is not only believable, but exciting as well. Five little kids cross the English Channel in a small sailboat, sailing it through a horrendous storm and avoiding deadly reefs and shoals. Because they are smart, determined not to give in, and know how to sail, they make it all the way to Holland from their home port in England. Superb!

Not Kindle-Friendly

The guidebook is chock-full of amazing content, but it is VERY difficult to navigate as an eBook. The Table of Contents is massive and doesn't do a good job of cutting each chapter into subsections. It's a bit easier to read on the Kindle Cloud Reader, mostly because of how colorful the fonts and pictures are.

Overall, I think it's a great guidebook. However, there are more Kindle-friendly guidebooks out there.

Very useful guide.

Quite detailed. Especially good for references to buses, trains, where to get then, and schedules. Great information on events. The best I have used. Tells visitors about Oyster cards (London underground) and Britrail passes ( purchase outside of U.K.) Good to read before ones trip and especially to take along.

The book covers such topics as loudspeaker design tradeoffs, spatial loading, diffraction loss, cavity effect and enclosure construction. A complete chapter is devoted to the subject of crossover design including design equations. The second edition adds a new chapter on simulation and analysis which includes design equations for closed and vented type speakers. The appendices contain technical references, design aids, glossaries and a chart depicting 18 different loudspeaker enclosure types.

Changes for the Second Edition:
The second edition brings new material and polishes the first edition with many new or improved illustrations. Chapter 2 was expanded with the second half split into a new Chapter 3 titled "Speaker Response Functions". The discussion of Thiele-Small parameters has been expanded and now covers small-signal parameters vs. large-signal parameters as it explores the role of the test signal level in parameter measurement. The crossover design chapter has been expanded to include formulas for calculating component values for the most popular crossover types. Equations have been added for calculating impedance compensation and attenuation networks. The old Chapter 7 FAQ material was integrated into other chapters as appropriate. A new Chapter 8 titled "Loudspeaker Simulation" has been added and introduces loudspeaker equivalent circuit analysis with equations for calculating the magnitude and phase responses of closed and vented loudspeaker systems. Additional design equations are introduced and then examples are given for calculating the responses of a closed box and a vented box loudspeaker. Detailed design equation summaries are given for closed and vented boxes. Appendix C was added to provide a glossary of symbols and a glossary of terms. The box type charts were moved to Appendix D.

The author is a physicist/audio design engineer with over 35 years experience in the research and development of audio products spanning both hardware and software. His WinSpeakerz, TrueRTA and DATS software applications are widely used throughout the audio industry as tools for simulating and measuring loudspeaker performance. Captain Murphy served as a space systems analyst for NORAD during his military career.

Must have for DIY audio but theory is excellent background for the audiophile who's just in it for the music!

This book really covers the details. I was particularly interested in cross-over design. Unfortunately there's not much here regarding active-crossovers and the impact on speaker design which is the direction i'd like to head. Nonetheless this is a "must read" book about loudspeakers.

Good book to get started. Some I already know, some is over my head, some practical for use right now. I want to build a specialized powered speaker. I have read a couple books and lots of articles, tried some softwares. This book Is practical, Another i am reading is too heavy on formulas, and over explaining complex theory. This one is a good for a me, A technician, not an engineer

Journalism's Eternal Verities

Isabel Allende counsels authors to "write what should not be forgotten." As newspapers crumble and new models for journalism emerge on the Web, many voices seem to be forgetting that journalism has a bedrock foundation. In this book the late Bill Woo, one of his generation's great writers, editors and teachers of journalism, writes what should not be forgotten. Journalism's eternal verities -- simple declarative sentences, careful marshaling of detail, careful verification of fact, respect for the readers, ethical clarity, and so much more come alive in Bill's elegant storytelling.

Every journalist, young and old, print and digital, should read this book -- it will provide a solid foothold in a shaky world.

But more than that, everyone who cares about the First Amendment, and thus about journalism's crucial role in democracy, should read this as well -- it will strengthen your grip on your values and illuminate them in new ways. And you will enjoy every word you read.

Kudos for William F. Woo's book

This book truly lives up to it's subtitle "Lessons on Journalism and Life." So you need not be directly involved in public journalism to appreciate it.

However, Bill, my close friend of over 50 years, would call me to task on that. He would claim (as a chapter in his book does claim) that any American who cherishes the first amendment to the Constitution is in fact "directly involved in public journalism," and is moreover in part responsible for its health and future.

Professor Woo's prose rolls out seemingly without effort. Large sections of the book will pass your eyes and brain at a single sitting, and you're at its end before you know it. At that point, you, as I, will no doubt be happy with the experience, sorry it's over, and furious that Bill is no longer with us to discuss parts of it with.

Graceful Writing, Compelling Lessons

We journalists who knew Bill Woo are fortunate indeed to have spent time in the company of one of the craft's greatest talents. We also knew Bill as a sensitive humanitarian. Both of these qualities are conspicuous in Letters from the Editor: Lessons on Journalism and Life. After an illustrious career as a reporter and editor, Bill spent his remaining years teaching aspiring journalists at Stanford. The letters in this book were lovingly compiled from the weekly essays he wrote for his Stanford students, instructing them on the finer points of journalism and of life itself. This book is well worth reading by anyone, but especially by the journalists of tomorrow.

A fascinating memoir

This is a fascinating memoir written by a respected physician who pioneered many life-saving advances in medicine after WWII. The book demonstrates clearly that success doesn't only come to those who memorize easily--those with process minds, coupled with curiosity and determination, can succeed and do make major contributions to society, although sometimes as unsung heroes. Life lessons learned in childhood, pre-WWII round-the-world travel on a bicycle, the rigors of medical training and the challenges of being on the front lines in WWII all helped shape his life and medical career and continue to bring value and joy to every day.

A Process Mind is a great trip back through the 20th century in the San Francisco Bay area and beyond, from a doctor's unique perspective. More than that, it's a window into the values, motives and life lessons of a man who's highest goal was to be "effective".
Surprisingly engaging and readable, even with the technical midsection (which should prove thought provoking to those in the medical field), this book contains wisdom, and an inspiring encouragement toward innovation. I loved it!
