This book is both instructive and a delight to read. How does it compare with similar books? There are no similar books. It is unique. Those who read and use this carefully written and illustrated book will emerge wiser and more skillful at interpreting one of the most interesting and most useful investigations at our disposal. I believe that the reader of this book will enjoy getting to grips with the chest X-ray and, in the process, become a better practitioner. This book is good value and would be useful for medical students, junior doctors, clinical nurses, physiotherapists and all those practitioners in primary care.

This is a very useful and brief guide to interpreting the chest X-ray, aimed primarily at medical students and junior doctors. Like all good teachers, the authors have succeeded in making interpretation of the chest X-ray very simple and logical. They have dispensed with some confusing old-fashioned terminology and in the process helped to demystify the interpretation of the chest film. This is a concise, well-written, well-illustrated and, most importantly, pocket-sized book which medical students and junior doctors should find extremely useful.

Academic Radiology

While this pocket guide is certainly not all encompassing,it is a handy resource for medical students and beginning house staff. It can easily be read before a new rotation or service. It is not detailed or extensive enough for radiology residents who will be better served by a reference text, but the goal set forth by the authors is to provide students and beginning clinical house staff with a quick review of chest film interpretation and provide examples of commonly encountered chest radiograph abnormalities. With that in mind, the authors have accomplished their goal.

Clinical radiology

The authors have made an excellent job of presenting the chest radiograph in a simple and concise format that should prove a firm foundation for someone starting out in clinical medicine. This little book will hopefully encourage the reader to search out more comprehensive texts without a sense of dread.

Intensive and Critical Care Nursing

This small and informative text is an absolute must for all nurses practising in an intensive or high dependency care environment. I can find little to criticize about this book and will certainly be recommending it to both my under and postgraduate clinical students as a required text.

This book contains attunements and empowerments to many different forms of Reiki and other energy modalities. Over 30,000 people have been attuned worldwide to the energies via this book and it is highly successful if you do strongly intend to receive them in a relaxed state. I have personally prepared the attunements and sent them via a chi ball to you, the reader of this book. Each attunement/empowerment was prepared with the intent that each is perfectly and powerfully received when each reader/recipient asks to receive. The book serves as an embedding mechanism for delivery of the attunements. Although there is a description of the modalities and some other information, the true purpose of this book is to deliver the prepared energies to you.

First, read the background information for the modalities, then when you are ready, begin receiving the attunements/empowerments one at a time, starting with Usui Reiki Level One. The order of the attunements/empowerments in the book is the order that I have found to be the best vibrationally. The modalities are ordered from lower vibration to higher vibration to facilitate reception of the energies.

Second, it is important for you, the reader, to be prepared when you receive the attunements/empowerments. It is best to receive, at most, one attunement per day, to assist with the integration of the energies. To receive, either sit or lie down in a place you will not be disturbed. Turn off your phone. Get in a restful, meditative state, focusing on your breath. This shuts off your mind and the stress from the day. A this point you are ready to receive the energies. Strongly desire to receive the attunement or empowerment you have chosen by saying the words to receive three times. Intend and express your will to receive the energies. This will help with the delivery of the energies.

Third, relax and receive. Don't guide the energies while you receive them, let them guide you. Relax, accept the process as perfect and accept the energies and feel the energy flow from your crown to many different parts of your body. Feel the energy over-light you. The process typically takes about 30 minutes. When you feel the energies have finished, give thanks to the Divine. Rest and drink water following each attunement or empowerment. Then follow the guidance for the next modality as stated in the background information for the modalities and then take the next attunement or empowerment on the next day or in a few days or a week, however it is stated in the introduction to the energies on how you should receive them. Also although the majority of people feel the energies powerfully, some may have an experience where the energies are subtle or not feel the energies at all. This depends on how clear each individual is and how relaxed an individual is when they request to receive the energies. Do not worry, the energies are perfectly received when you ask for them, even if you do not always feel them at first. They continue working on you while you sleep and over time, clearing you, healing you, and attuning you to assist you in your path of becoming a healer. Feel free to practice giving yourself a self healing after each attunement or empowerment, this will strengthen the flow of energy to heal yourself and others. Place your hands on yourself and say "(Name of system) Reiki on!" Wait and then the energies will begin to flow through you.

All you need to know about early Georgian English Interiors

As a classically trained english architect I find myself in a unique position to authoritively review this book. And what a book. That perfect blend of photos (most of them colour), drawings - both plans and renderings, and an informative text. This is a must for anyone interested in early Georgian Interiors, as it comprehensively covers interior architecture, decoration, furniture/artwork, and the general design aesthetic of this era. If only we still had the artisians and cratspeople to still build like this. It is an inspiration to any aspiring classical architect.

At Tokyo’s Institute for Psychiatric Research, beautiful, 29-year-old psychiatrist Atsuko Chiba is effecting rapid cures of schizophrenia. Using devices developed by colleague Kosaku Tokita, a grotesquely obese and child-like genius, Atsuko enters patients’ dreams and participates in them, and she and Tokita have been short-listed for the Nobel Prize. But for reasons of professional jealousy, hubris, and twisted sexual desire, a doctor and a top administrator at the institute steal the devices and begin to “infect” staff members with schizophrenia. Only Atsuko can oppose them, and she must do that in both the real world and the nightmarish dreams of the victims. Tsutsui is one of Japan’s leading science-fiction authors, and Paprika, published in Japan in 1993, was also made into an animated film. Some U.S. readers may have difficulty accepting some of the book’s premises; for instance, that schizophrenia could be sent into “remission” in a day or two. Others might question the nature of relationships between men and women that Paprika posits. Paprika - A Novel of Ideas, Obscured By Cultural Differences

Paprika (Vintage Contemporaries Original) is a thought provoking novel that blends science fiction with philosophy, psychology and literature of the grandest tradition. Yet despite all these superlatives, I cannot say that this novel is bound to be appreciated by everybody. Nor can I say that many of the criticisms of it have been invalid. Where I take a different perspective is in the reasoning behind the criticisms. While many seem to blame the translation, I suspect that this book was written this way intentionally and translated as intended. There are just certain themes that may have a different context within the cultural world of Japan.

Like many readers, I selected this book as somebody who had some background on it. I am a huge admirer of Satoshi Kon, whose anime interpretation of this book Paprika was, unfortunately, his last work. I always felt disappointed that I could not read the book upon which that anime was based. Luckily for me, this translation was made available in less time than it has taken me to gain an ability to read Japanese.

In many ways, Kon's visualization is very true to this book. The problem is that the technical nature of writing makes telling this story in this format much more laborious. At the same time, some may simply appreciate the visual appeal of such abstract moving images a lot more than words. So much of this book occurs in a dream state, it is understandable that it translated so well to the anime format. Moreover, reading that a character is attractive is never the same as being presented with an attractive image.

There is also a dryness to the way this book is written. While some have blamed the translator, I suspect the author intended this. In the same way, there are themes that seem to be difficult for us to appreciate as non-Japanese. As an example, there is an enhanced cultural obsession with an unattractive man paired with an attractive woman. The working relationship between Atsuko Chiba and Dr. Tokita is an expression of this.

Yet despite its inaccessibility, this book deals with some incredibly deep philosophical themes. The focus on using PT devices for psychotherapy makes us question the nature of thought and memory, and how our perceptions can alter our mental state with the passage of time. Even the very individuality of our own thoughts must be questioned.

CONCLUSION

This is not a book that will appeal to everybody. But it will pay dividends to those who take the time to reflect on it. At times the story can move a little slowly. But it always moves with purpose. Take the time to appreciate it. I have waited a long time to read this book, and I am glad that I did.

incredible book

It's so surprising to me that this book isn't as popular as it should be in America. It has every element that I think a lot of people want in a novel. It's incredibly smart in both dialog and story line, and it's interesting in a scientific way, as well as in an artful, darkly surreal way. His thought processes as he writes are acute and effective yet beautifully detached and creative. He goes through people's inner dialogs in an incredibly psychiatric way--like he wants to subtly point out everybody's neurosis, thereby creating a theme. It certainly set up a certain aura. However, it turns out the translation is pretty weak, but I forget about that as I read it because the story is so unique and engaging.
I can only hope that the anime can attract people's attention to the book. While the anime is beautiful and perfect for Satoshi Kon's visual style, the book is a totally individual experience

The Inmates Are Running the Asylum

This is a wild and disturbing SF novel based on the premise that in the near future technology has been developed to allow psychiatrists to observe, even invade and manipulate the dreams of their patients in order to treat them. Patients have been cured using this method; however, there are risks: doctors can become trapped inside their patients' subconscious, even be driven insane.

This isn't even the half of it!

There are people who oppose this sort of technology and will do anything to stop it. So when Dr. Kosaku Tokita, the (almost?) mad genius behind it creates a stunningly advanced next generation device, all his prototypes are stolen and his assistant disappears. Meanwhile the colleague who used his first generation devices to cure people even back when it was illegal to do so, Dr. Atsuko Chiba, is called upon to revive her former secret identity as Paprika, the Dream Detective, in order to treat some high level patients who need to conceal the fact that they have any mental issues. In the process she picks up images leaking from the new devices and figures out who took them, but reveals herself in the process. Soon there is an all out war being fought in the dreams of the various combatants as their dream powers keep growing in strength until things from their dreams begin to manifest themselves in the real world.

Then all Hell breaks loose.

I was initially worried I'd have difficulty following the plot as even the characters find themselves unable to distinguish between dreams and reality, especially when dream constructs start leaking into the real world, but it turned out not to be that difficult. Maybe that's why unlike some reviewers I DIDN'T find the writing tedious or repetitive. Now, I have to agree with other reviewers that the characters were a bit stereotypical and two dimensional, but I think I see a method in author Yasutaka Tsutsui's madness. On the surface this is a pretty black and white anime style tale (in fact it was adapted for anime to considerable acclaim: Paprika) with noble good guys and totally evil bad guys, but by making so many of the medical personnel on both sides so certifiable, the author seems to be suggesting that this is power not even the best intended can handle. Our Nobel prize nominated heroes are introduced fighting like toddlers over a bento box lunch, and it just gets weirder. Kosaku is a childishly naive, morbidly obese, ugly, absolute genius who lives with his mother. Atsuko/Paprika is a stunningly beautiful woman that all the male characters are in love/lust with who habitually falls in love/lust with her male patients and has some peculiarly favorable ideas about being raped. Institute Administrator Torataro Shima is a barely functioning nonentity (who is also in love/lust with Atsuko), the villains are only somewhat more insane than everyone else, and the rest of the doctors and staff of the Institute for Psychiatric Research appear less well put together than most of the patients we meet, thus my review title. In fact it is arguably the Paprika Brigade, the group of former patients and other male admirers who save the day in the end more than even Paprika does, partly because they are able to maintain a tighter grip on reality.

It will certainly not be everyone's cup of tea, and I doubt I will ever reread it, but it did make me think...

before giving me a headache.

Awesome western romance with a love triangle

Some readers can't stand love triangles but I enjoy them. This one has a good one and it didn't make the reader feel bad that one hero won over the other. This is really a story about a young woman and her life and her loves and living out on the American frontier. The romance is really, really nice. The chemistry is burning hot. I read this book several years ago and just purchased the digital copy. I know this review isn't helpful but I remember parts of this story still today and would recommend this book without hesitation along with her other romance novels.

I have read Heart of the West at least five times and it was just put out on Kindle and I have that too. A wonderful heart warming story of a young woman who is married and is drawn to her husbands brother. you will laugh, cry and love the characters also. I guarantee you will not want to put this book down or turn off your kindle once you start reading this story. Penelope Williamson is a great writer ....

This book changed my life.

It's my favorite book of all time... literally! I read this book when I was younger and after all of these years, I have not found a book that can equal it's power. It actually changed my direction in life, leading me to move to Montana, which became the best decision I ever made. The story is not just a simple romance, but a historical, cultural and spiritual piece that delves deep into the storyline and into your heart. I've never so felt so attached to characters from a novel before. I full and whole-heartedly recommend this book!
