This book is a textbook for a course I am taking. The information is good, but the writers use strange sentence construction from time to time, making the material hard to understand, and rather dry.

The Sharing Economy: The End of Employment and the Rise of Crowd-Based Capitalism (MIT Press), by Arun Sundararajan

Sharing isn't new. Giving someone a ride, having a guest in your spare room, running errands for someone, participating in a supper club -- these are not revolutionary concepts. What is new, in the "sharing economy," is that you are not helping a friend for free; you are providing these services to a stranger for money. In this book, Arun Sundararajan, an expert on the sharing economy, explains the transition to what he describes as "crowd-based capitalism" -- a new way of organizing economic activity that may supplant the traditional corporate-centered model. As peer-to-peer commercial exchange blurs the lines between the personal and the professional, how will the economy, government regulation, what it means to have a job, and our social fabric be affected?

Drawing on extensive research and numerous real-world examples -- including Airbnb, Lyft, Uber, Etsy, TaskRabbit, France's BlaBlaCar, China's Didi Kuaidi, and India's Ola, Sundararajan explains the basics of crowd-based capitalism. He describes the intriguing mix of "gift" and "market" in its transactions, demystifies emerging blockchain technologies, and clarifies the dizzying array of emerging on-demand platforms. He considers how this new paradigm changes economic growth and the future of work. Will we live in a world of empowered entrepreneurs who enjoy professional flexibility and independence? Or will we become disenfranchised digital laborers scurrying between platforms in search of the next wedge of piecework? Sundararajan highlights the important policy choices and suggests possible new directions for self-regulatory organizations, labor law, and funding our social safety net.

Review

Information technology is disrupting a host of industries including transportation, hotels, banks, and marketplaces. The very nature of work is changing. Sundararajan offers an insightful guide to the forces shaping our economy today -- and tomorrow.

(Hal Varian, Chief Economist, Google)

Fortunes have already been made in the sharing economy, yet the biggest impact on business and our daily lives is yet to come. There's no better guide to this transformation than Arun Sundararajan's book.

(Erik Brynjolfsson, co-author of The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies)

Sundararajan has taken all the loose talk about the sharing economy and given it a rigorous and readable treatment. He makes it clear that there is no one model for these new economic forms, but that taken together, they represent a profound shift in how we think about everything from utility to capital to labor to employment.

(Clay Shirky, author of Cognitive Surplus and Here Comes Everybody)

So all in all, a very interesting book by one the most knowledgeable researchers on the sharing economy. Well worth a read.

(The Enlightened Economist)

Sundararajan knows his stuff. He's an award winning scholar who writes with a clarity that masks the compleity of his subject.

(Finance and Development)

In his new book, Arun Sundararajan paints a rosy picture of the revolutionary companies and platforms that are altering the nature of work.

(Strategy + Business)

Sundararajan...sees enough value in the sharing economy.

(TED)

His case for optimismin his new bookis compellingin large part because it comes from a business-school wonkand not a "sharing!" proselytizer devotedtothe literal meaningof the word.

(The Washington Post)

A wonderful and absorbing treatise on the Sharing Economy
By Apostolos Filippas
How often do we hear about the Sharing Economy, either through daily reports of the transformation it is constantly causing in markets and long incumbent firms, or the numerous debates between its proponents and skeptics? Very, if you read news outlets like the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, or if you are an entrepreneur, researcher, or executive. Even if not, you probably have already used a Sharing Economy platform (as has a whopping 70% of the US population).

Arun Sundararajan, a professor who is an expert on the Sharing Economy, opens up by drawing from personal experience to motivate the questions that this book seeks to answer. I find his proposed “Crowd-based Capitalism” term to be a much more accurate and clear description of this economic model, but (as he does) I’ll be referring to it by the more popular Sharing Economy denomination.

The first part of the book masterfully lays out foundations that should greatly benefit anyone attempting to delve into the Sharing Economy. The journey begins with the important lessons that the evolution of Sharing Economy thinking has taught us. Sundararajan then proceeds to uncover the factors that enabled the proliferation of these platforms, centering on digital technologies and on socioeconomic drivers such us the emergence of large urban centers - cities are, after all, Sharing Economies in and of themselves. A very intuitive framework is then constructed, that allows us to treat Sharing Economy platforms as structures spanning the spectrum between hands-off marketplaces and the traditional firm hierarchy. This part concludes by giving as a sneak-peek at a fast-approaching future, where blockchain technologies promise to further empower Sharing Economy platforms and even transfer a larger share of power into the hands of the people. It is not possible to overstate the importance of the first part to anyone who wants a firm grasp of the drivers of the Sharing Economy, as well as to those who have to predict whether such platforms are likely to succeed or fail.

The second part is devoted to studying the impact that the Sharing Economy has been shown to have on the economy and the workforce. The excellent discussion of regulatory issues is one of my favorite parts of the book; Sundararajan carefully examines why current regulation can be ill-suited and might stifle innovation in Sharing Economy platforms and hinder economic growth. He then provides well-thought and innovative suggestions towards a better regulatory framework which highlight the need for worker protections and rights. I found these suggestions not only particularly interesting, but also potentially applicable outside the Sharing Economy context.

I could go on for much longer, but I will stop the spoilers here. It should be clear from the above that this is not another hagiographic book touting the latest fad. Instead, Sundararajan provides us with a concise, deep, and multidimensional study of the Sharing Economy, pointing out both the tremendous potential benefits and perils. The arguments he makes are careful and detailed, always grounded on academic research and made clear through numerous examples.

Among the strongest points of this book is that it does not only impart deep knowledge about the inner workings of this new economic system, but will also unavoidably kindle your enthusiasm for the future that the Sharing Economy promises. Sundararajan is an affable optimist, and makes an important case why we should join him.

Review
"Brilliant! All the childhood treats I'm nostalgic for in one smart volume. Toaster tarts, cereal bars, and ice cream sandwiches made from real ingredients? I'll take one of each, please."
Heidi Swanson, author ofSuper Natural Everyday

"Lara's book is a beautifully photographed selection of 'goters' (snacks) that will make you want to rush into the kitchen and bake for your children, family, and friends. If you feel short of ideas to make healthful snacks (also gluten free and vegan), her book has the answer."
Ba Peltre, La Tartine Gourmande

"Real Snacks is a dream come true. We all know we should eat quinoa, kale, and carrots at every meal, but sometimes we need a treat. If that treat is made with whole grains and alternative sweeteners, all the better. Lara Ferroni's playful yet truly helpful book introduces readers to unfamiliar ingredients such as amaranth flour or coconut palm sugar in the midst of making moon pies, chocolate toffee bars, and crunchy cheese puffs. That so many of the recipes can be made gluten-free is a boon for those of us who have to avoid gluten entirely. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to make some nacho cheese tortilla chips."
Shauna Ahern,Gluten-Free Girl

"This book, like Doughnuts, punches way above its weight in every category—aesthetics, recipes, variety, and nostalgia. All your childhood favorites are here: twinkies, Hostess cupcakes, powdered donettes, caramel corn, fig newtons, goldfish, moon pies, sugar wafers, pop tarts, thin mints, cheez-its… The mindboggles!! I really can’t believe Lara has put this together! Gluten-free and vegan options make it accessible for everyone. This book is worth every penny, and would be tremendously appreciated by anyone who loves baking!"
Kristina Gill, Matt Bites

"If you're one of those people who reads the ingredient ilst on the back of a bag of Cheetos but buys them anyway, this one's for you. Lara Ferroni is coming to the rescue. She's managed to recreate, some would say reengineer, some of the world's most beloved snacks like Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and Cheezits, without all that bad stuff."
Lynne Rossetto Kasper, The Splendid Table

"Every once in a while I get a book from publisher that makes me want to run to my computer and type a review immediately so I can share the great news. This is the case with this book,Real Snacks: Make Your Favorite Childhood Treats Without All the Junk. This book is all about recreating childhood favorites in a healthier way with wholesome flours like spelt flour , buckwheat flour and whole wheat flour...All the recipes have a vegan and gluten-free version. Best crackers ever!
By M. Anderson
What can I say? I really love this book. I have made 4 recipes and they all turned out fabulously delicious. The first thing that caught my eye browsing was the crackers sections so the first thing I tried out was the butter crackers. My search for the best homemade crackers is over, these crackers were crispy buttery goodness; my daughter prefers these to store bought wheat thins. It's great with savory spreads, nutella or peanut butter. The gluten free cinnamon rolls are soooo good! My husband has requested the rolls twice already and I've only had the book for a week.
I especially love that most of the recipes have a gluten free variation. I have a gluten free kitchen and these recipes are just perfect.

So much fun
By Patrick Q Fagan
These are just great recipes for fun items that I never would have thought I could make.
The best part is that each recipe contains choices of ingredients so you can decide how healthy or decadent you want to make them.

I'm going to be using a lot of these recipes for upcoming holiday parties

Wonderful and fun
By K.M.T.
I bought this book so I could make crackers to pack in my kids lunches for school. Even though there are 100% natural & organic crackers available at the store, the ingredient lists are very long, and with a lot of things I do not recognize. I started off by making the recipe for goldfish crackers--although mine did not turn out like the picture (nor did I get the quantity of fish the recipe said I would), my kids went crazy for them.
This cookbook is very easy to follow, and there are nice pictures of almost every recipe. She puts an ingredient glossary in the beginning, which I found to be very informative and helpful. Recipes are simple, and directions are clearly written. A+
Although (as the author clearly states) these recipes are NOT low fat or healthy, they are wonderful for special occasions (the homemade twinkies are awesome & easy).
I highly recommend this book.

Basic Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine (International Acupuncture Textbooks)From Singing Dragon

Traditional Chinese medicine has a long and complex history, yet the basic principles at the heart of practice have remained the same for hundreds of years. Without a solid understanding of these fundamental theories, effective practice is impossible, and this book provides a complete introduction to everything that students and practitioners, both new and experienced, need to know.

The book describes and explains all of the fundamental principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including yin/yang, the five elements, the 'zang and fu' organs, Zang Xiang, Qi, and the meridians and collaterals of the body. Explaining not only the principles upon which these elements work, but also how they interrelate, the book describes how they can be used in practice to identify, treat and prevent ill-health and disease.

This thorough and accessible textbook, compiled by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial directorship of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is essential reading for students of traditional Chinese medicine, and is also a useful basic reference for TCM practitioners.

Although the lucidity of this textbook would have been even more leveraged in the first few years of my OM studies, I find its clarity of context heady refreshment as I am approaching the end of my third decade of practice. -- OMJ the simple descriptions of these ideas are very helpful to a novice and would underpin a much more advanced study of TCM syndromes. -- The JAACP (The Journal of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists) Combining practical instruction with detailed theory, this authoritative textbook, complied by the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Center (CBIATC), under the editorial direction of leading Chinese clinicians Zhu Bing and Wang Hongcai, is an excellent reference for students and practitioners at all levels... Although modest in size, these texts are packed with information... in terms of portability and cost... they make themselves serious contenders for the college bags of students of Chinese medicine... In terms of visual presentation, other than the obligatory yin-yang and five-phase diagrams, assistance is limited to a few flow diagrams, which may disappoint more visually-orientated learners. This drawback is largely compensated for by the consistent use of clear tables that facilitate both learning and quick reference. Despite the drawback of the simplification inherent in such texts, some of the chapters are excellent. The chapter on emotions and elements in Basic Theories, for example, is particularly good, as is the chapter on bianzheng in the Diagnostic volume. The chapters on pulse and tongue are also well-written, and designed for quick navigation to allow mere seconds to access, for example, the description and significance of a tense pulse or a grey tongue coating. As such... These texts offer simple, portable, concise and well-structured information that is consistent with the TCM literature already available. On occasion, refreshingly original insights come from the teaching experience of the authors. Whilst this series does not necessarily offer an educational panacea, it may just offer what is missing on the market - an affordable, accurate and accessible series of texts written specifically for a Western mindset and understanding. If the rest of this series of text books are as good as the two reviewed here (Diagnostic of Chinese Medicine and Basic Theories of Chinese Medicine), Singing Dragon Textbooks will definitely become part of the recommended reading of Chinese medicine courses; student in the early stages of their TCM studies o those that require a fresh angle or portable material for revision should certainly consider buying them. -- Journal of Chinese Medicine, Greg Meier Although the lucidity of this textbook would have been even more leveraged in the first few years of my OM studies, I find its clarity of context heady refreshment as I am approaching the end of my third decade of practice. -- Frank Yurasek Ph. Good book, however "basic" is what it is
By James
This book reads easily and explains the majority of content in a manner easy to understand for people not familiar with chinese medicine.
Strong points are: Chinese philosophy, e.g. Ying Yang, 5 Elements. Good introduction to Zang Fu and the meridians.

However, it lacks a little depth in certain VITAL TO UNDERSTAND areas. I would have hoped certain aspects of TCM in more detail, for example the creation and circulation of the vital substances, e.g. Qi, Blood, Jing, and the entire Fluid Metabolism from a TCM perspective. These areas are lacking information and are not very helpful fro anybody wanting an introduction.

Four Things Women Want from a Man, by A. R. Bernard

After decades of preaching, teaching, and counseling, influential Christian leader A.R. Bernard reveals the four qualities women want in a man—qualities that contribute to a satisfying and happy relationship.

As a longtime pastor of a big-city church, A.R. Bernard has witnessed couples in every stage of life. He’s been with them as they experienced dizzying joys, unspeakable tragedies, and everything in between.

As men and women have come to Bernard for spiritual counseling and advice, he’s learned patterns of behavior that are repeated time and again. After almost four decades of preaching, teaching, and counseling, he’s seen that while every situation is unique, people’s behaviors and consequences are amazingly consistent. With this in mind, Bernard has developed a simple system for understanding how couples relate to each other.

Maturity, decisiveness, consistency, and strength—these are the four things women want and need most from a man. In his book, Bernard teaches readers how to identify and cultivate these traits toward a happy and long-lasting relationship—one built to weather any storm.

The key qualities in men sought by women, explained from a place of kindness
By outwest
The minefield of modern day dating and relationships is befuddling, and particularly in a world with so many competing viewpoints and media saturation. Cutting through all of the jargon Bernand focuses on four traits, maturity, decisiveness, consistency, and strength. Through his experience, these four factors are detailed as being the traits women seek, as well as the foundations for the makings of a responsible male.

In retrospect, the four traits appear simple enough, however each of the four involves self-discipline, which appears to be the overarching theme of all four factors. The development of each of these four factors requires accurate self-reflection and self-discipline; you cannot fake maturity, decisiveness, consistency or strength. Fortunately faith, family, and community can all serve to help in these qualities.

This book will give the clueless a better clue as to what a woman is really looking for in a life partner, and start some on the path to developing a more mature self.

This book is short and to the point. You can get through it within a few hours and come out of it with a lifetime of learning. For men, something to judge yourself by. For women, things you should look for in a man.

I read this book because my pastor (Pastor Bernard) is extremely insightful. I figured I would support the book and still read his insight on this matter. What I got was more than what I expected. I learned quite a few things about myself and my marriage for that matter. I was contemplating divorce this book helped me get to root of my problem and why I have had such a hard time moving forward. I addressed the matter with my spouse and our relationship has been better since and each day we are working on new things. Thank you, thank you, thank you Pastor.

Also present at the creation
By Bill EuDaly
James F. Byrnes was a major political figure in the last half of the Twentieth Century. A canny master politician, He most coveted the role of statesman. He is usually best remembered today as the governor of South Carolina during the landmark desegregation cases in the 1950's. But he was also a Supreme Court Justice, Secretary of State, and presidential hopeful. His proximity to power made him an important advisor to Presidents, and his influence on national policy was unmistakable.
He had reached the pinnacle of the legal profession when appointed by FDR to the highest court, was bored, and resigned. He wanted to be FDR's Vice President when Henry Wallace was dumped, but Truman was chosen by the Democratic bosses instead. Byrnes was, by all accounts, very angry about this, but as a long time friend of Truman's, and a patriot, he continued to work with him. Some believe Byrnes had an inordinate amount of influence with Truman, especially regarding the decision to drop the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima.
"Speaking Frankly" is Byrne's memoir of the years before, during, and after World War Two. He begins with high drama: a rally at Nuremberg where he sees ominous signs in Hitler and the Nazis. In the pages that follow Byrnes recounts the ten year period (1937-1947) in which he became a major player on the world stage. Byrnes seems to pop up anywhere that there is a conference or planning session devoted to the war effort and postwar reconstruction. He met and worked with many world leaders, and his impressions of them are interesting. Truman, Churchill, FDR, and many other Allied figures are profiled, as well as Molotov and Stalin. Stalin is referred to as "Generalissimo Stalin" by Byrnes.
The Cold War was in its infancy when the book was Published in 1947. There was much internal debate about the growing Soviet threat and how to confront it. Byrne's clearly saw Russia as a threat to postwar peace in Europe, and believed that it must be confronted. In his view, "firmness brings results." After leaving the State Department in January 1947, Byrnes continued to play a role in state and national politics, often behind the scenes.
This is a valuable book for those interested in World War Two and the Cold War. There is of course a vast amount of Literature on the subject, and popular works like Dean Acheson's "Present at the Creation" are more detailed accounts of the Truman's Cold War policies. Acheson's book, of course, was written many years later. But Byrnes deserves to be remembered, and this book gives a good glimpse of his mind and how he thought. The fact that it was written so early makes it especially interesting, and shows that Byrne's predictions about future US/Soviet relations were largely accurate.

Language and the Brain (Cambridge Approaches to Linguistics), by Loraine K. Obler, Kris Gjerlow

How do our brains enable us to speak creatively and build up an understanding of language? This accessible book examines the linguistic and neuro-anatomical underpinnings of language and considers how language skills can systematically break down in individuals with different types of brain damage. By studying children with language disorders, adults with right-hemisphere brain damage, demented patients and people with reading problems, the authors provide an understanding of how language is organized in the brain.

Outdated and Confusing Introduction to Neurolinguistics
By Alexandra Monroe
Overview:
I read this book as part of an in-depth research project on language processing for an introduction to neuroscience class. I was highly disappointed in the use of content based solely on behavioral studies rather than imaging studies and the poor organization of information being presented. Although the focus is based on behavioral case studies as support for its findings, very little of the claims are grounded in quantitative imaging data. While the authors of Language and the Brain wrote the book in 1999 when this field was less commonly used than it is now, the glossing-over of this technology and its importance to the field of neurolinguistics is disappointing. Updated editions of this book are necessary in order to fully describe neurolinguistics and how the brain permits us to have language

Synopsis of Parts:
The first three chapters briefly introduce neurolinguistics and its subparts phonology, morphology, syntax, discourse, and semantics; the general localizationism or connectionism approaches to studying neurolinguistics; an introduction to the brain and nervous system important for linguistic study, and a brief overview of the methods for brain analysis including imaging but with a large focus on history. These descriptions are fairly simple and easy to understand - one of the authors' goals for the book outlined in the preface.

The subsequent three chapters on aphasia proceed to try and describe the different types of language disorders due to brain injury. They begin with aphasia classifications including accounts of Broca's research on the ability to produce speech, Wernicke's research on the ability to understand speech, and conduction aphasia, the ability to repeat spoken language. In the next chapter, it develops the underlying causes for each of these patterns and links them to a particular brain area that, when damaged, results in the deficit. Then the book describes the study of children with developmental language disorders in order to investigate the syntactic abilities of the left hemisphere, but claims that they are "hard to evaluate in terms of brain regions because the nature of brain malfunction is rarely, if ever, clear." Finally, the book discusses right brain damage, in order to investigate how it participates in the perception or production of language.

The next group of chapters outlines other language issues not associated with brain injury like the loss of language due to dementia, difficulties with reading known as dyslexia or alexia, and issues with writing knows as dysgraphia.

Finally the books describe other aspects of language and the brain including bilingualism and the interactions between two or more languages in processing; language organization including in-depth discussions of phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon, and semantics; and, finally, the future of neurolinguistics including artificial intelligence, the relationship between language and cognition, and brain imaging.

Style and Structure:
The authors of the book focused on case studies of patients and their brain lesions, or damage areas, to explain their behaviors in most of the highlighted studies. It is much more of a discussion on linguistics and the brain areas associated with the various aspects of linguistics than it is an exploration of language processing.

Specific Opinions:
This book opens under the pretense that it's dealing with the study of neurolinguistics, or "how the brain (neuro) permits us to have language(linguistics)". In the preface the authors claim, "We assume that many readers of this volume will not have such a background, and thus we chose to focus, in the majority of chapters, on the special populations who provide us with knowledge of language organization in the brain." However the case study methods only deal with lesion patients and their language behavior with little attention to the quantitative fMRI or ERP data.

As a neuroscience student, I read the book in hopes of gaining insight into language processing and the relationship to not only brain areas, but also brain functionality. The localizationism approach in this book using the case study method provides ample support for which areas of the brain are associated with the different types of language disorders, but provides almost no insight into the aspects of processing other than timing, or how the brain really permits us to have language. While the individual region of the brain that contribute to language are important, the interaction and integration of these parts that allows us to speak, write, read, and comprehend language is what interested me in neurolinguistics in the first place and led me to reading this book.

The organization of "Language and the Brain" also contributed to my disappointment. In the introduction, the authors claim that neurolinguistics is often subcategorized into the areas of phonology, morphology, syntax, discourse, and semantics. These concepts, while referenced throughout the book, are not fully developed until the penultimate chapter, Language Organization, right before the discussion of the future of linguistics. As I read the Language and the Brain, I was often confused frustrated with its use of terms that weren't explained until the end of the book, if ever.

Overall I would not recommend Language and the Brain to other readers. It is outdated, disorganized, and, in my opinion, does not accomplish the goals it sets out to achieve in the preface. It adequately describes the areas associated with language function by highlighting the behavioral studies associated with damage and processing. These case studies and discussions on the types of language disorders may provide useful information for the study of linguistics, but they do so from more of a psycholinguistic perspective than a neurolinguistic one.
Readers should look elsewhere for information about how the brain allows us to have language. Many advancements in understanding in this field have been achieved through the use of imaging techniques such as Event Related Potential (ERP) recordings which allow temporal analysis and fMRI recordings which allow spatial analysis of brain activity but little mention of those techniques and none of the evidence that they provide are included in this text. To be useful in the current study of neurolinguistics, the authors should consider printing updated editions to include more details on the use and findings of newer technologies rather than continuing subsequent printings of this book.

Language and the Brain
By Stephen Pellerine
I think there was a lot of potential for this book, but think it came up short of my expectations. It is more of a 3.5 than a 3, but I love literature in this area. For spot reading the book is brilliant and informative, and I would not hesitate recommending that someone pick this up (for a reasonable fee) in interested in cognition and language.

I enjoyed chapters 4-5-6 all on aphasia. You can walk away after these sections understanding a bit more of a critical issue in the neurosciences/neurophilosophy.

I think the Neurocognition of Language (see: The Neurocognition of Language is perhaps a better read.

The Vital Question: Energy, Evolution, and the Origins of Complex Life, by Nick Lane

To explain the mystery of how life evolved on Earth, Nick Lane explores the deep link between energy and genes.

The Earth teems with life: in its oceans, forests, skies and cities. Yet there’s a black hole at the heart of biology. We do not know why complex life is the way it is, or, for that matter, how life first began. In The Vital Question, award-winning author and biochemist Nick Lane radically reframes evolutionary history, putting forward a solution to conundrums that have puzzled generations of scientists.

For two and a half billion years, from the very origins of life, single-celled organisms such as bacteria evolved without changing their basic form. Then, on just one occasion in four billion years, they made the jump to complexity. All complex life, from mushrooms to man, shares puzzling features, such as sex, which are unknown in bacteria. How and why did this radical transformation happen?

The answer, Lane argues, lies in energy: all life on Earth lives off a voltage with the strength of a lightning bolt. Building on the pillars of evolutionary theory, Lane’s hypothesis draws on cutting-edge research into the link between energy and cell biology, in order to deliver a compelling account of evolution from the very origins of life to the emergence of multicellular organisms, while offering deep insights into our own lives and deaths.

Both rigorous and enchanting, The Vital Question provides a solution to life’s vital question: why are we as we are, and indeed, why are we here at all?

What is living? The question that answers how common life is in the cosmos
By Steve Reina
According to Nick Lane the science of biology has at least two holes in it:

1) How did life arise on Earth? and

2) How did complex life arise on Earth?

To answer these questions Nick Lane reduced them further to one simple inquiry: what is living?

To seasoned science readers Nick Lane will be a very familiar name. That's because he wrote several biology books all of which were at least great reading including Power, Sex and Suicide, Oxygen, and Life Ascending. In Power, Sex and Suicide Nick Lane considered the humble mitochondria. In Oxygen Lane considered the various roles of oxygen in cell life and death. And finally in Life Ascending Nick Lane made a tour of evolution's ten greatest inventions in which he also detailed his thoughts on DNA.

In this book Lane draws from his earlier works, pulling them together and building on them in considering his grand question:

What is living?

To answer this question Lane considers the three main domains of life now on Earth: bacteria, archea and eukaryotes. Bacteria and archea are simple single celled creatures that differ in how their DNA replicates and also how their cell membranes are constructed. Eukaryotes combine bacteria in the form of mitchondria inside archea to create essentially super cells capable of producing 200,000 times the energy what either could produce alone.

According to fossil records archea and bacteria have inhabited Earth for the better part of four billion years. It took another two and a half billion for them to combine forces creating eukaryotes and of course much more time after that for eukaryotes to create the more visibly complex life we think of when we think of biology.

So what is living? In an exceedingly complex discussion (lay readers beware!) Lane explains that living is how protons permeate membrane structure in a way that produces energy. According to Lane this method of living is common to all life on Earth. That's why the conventional wisdom is that life on Earth had a common genesis because at root its various domains take advantage of such a similar process.

But how did that process arise? According to Lane it arose from a unique combination of readily available ingredients: 1) rock (albeit a specific type of rock), 2) liquid water and finally 3) CO2. For how these elements were combined Lane gives new science readers a new phrase...."alkaline hydrothermal venting." While even seasoned readers may not recognize Lane's phrase they will no doubt be familiar with the notion on underwater vents. The most notable of these were discovered by the deep sea submersible Alvin back in 1977 and are referred to as black smokers for the color the super heated water they vent into the ocean floor. Alkaline venting involves a similar deep sea process albeit with a specific type of rock called olivine. While a discussion of the specifics really is best left to Lane himself his thesis says that life arose when organic membranes arose that could acquire energy through proton membrane permeation.

According to Lane bacteria and archea are different because they each made a different exodus from their original alkaline vent homes. Ultimately the creation of eukaryotes and with them complicated life took so very long because it was such a very chance event.

A true believer in his thesis Lane argues that his notions of how life and complex life arose could have implications for exobiology. As he rightly points out Kepler evidence now suggests the presence of some 40 billion Earth like worlds in the Milky Way alone. Because olivine, liquid water and CO2 are rightly expected to be so common among them Lane suggests that life should be fairly common while complex life should probably be fairly rare. Again seasoned readers will be reminded of Peter Ward's great classic: Rare Earth, which suggested for other reasons that complex life should be relatively rare in the cosmos.

Whether science ultimately proves of disproves Lane of course is a matter for another day. But in the here and now interested readers will be nothing less than thrilled with this book which suggests not only so much about life on Earth but life itself.

So much for ammonia, methane, and primordial soup
By Karen K Hartsuyker
I just finished this thought-provoking and well-argued book that brought together my deep interests in origin of life, evolution, and nuclear-organellar interactions. However, I am a Ph.D. molecular biologist and much as I liked the book agree with the reviewers who commented on how technical it is. I recommend it strongly to biologists who were schooled on a primordial methane-ammonia atmosphere as the alkaline vent explanation and involvement of proton gradients and iron-sulfur complexes is much more compelling. Highly motivated and well-read non-experts will also find it interesting. My one complaint is that I think that the illustrations could have been clearer in many cases, though some of the difficulty is certainly that they are black and white. I also don't think that the occasional reference to God adds anything Still, these are small quibbles and the book is superb.

Vivid, original, provocative, and enlightening
By Israel Ramirez
The book covers three inter-related topics: the origin of life, the origin of complex organisms (eukaryotes), and the consequences of having a dual system of inheritance (nuclear and mitochondrial genes) in complex organisms.

Lane proposes that the system by which most organisms convert energy to usable biochemicals (especially ATP) provides an important clue about how life originated. Organisms pump hydrogen ions outside of a membrane in a fashion analogous to a pump that pushes water into a water tower. Much as the flow of water out of a tower can be used to power an electric generator, organisms use this hydrogen ion gradient to produce ATP which serves as universal source of energy for cells.

Lane argues that deep-sea alkaline hydrothermal vents provided all the conditions necessary for the origin of life. These vents continuously provide hydrogen and carbon dioxide which can be combined to yield energy and organic compounds. These vents also contain metallic compounds, especially iron and sulfur containing compounds, that could serve as catalysts for the chemical reactions needed by the precursors of living organisms. Furthermore, the structures created in these vents contain pores that could serve as nurseries for the precursors of living organisms. Most importantly, boundaries in these pores permit the creation of an electrochemical gradient similar to hydrogen ion gradient that exists in living things.

Complex organisms, called eukaryotes, are much larger than bacteria and have multiple structures inside the cell, especially mitochondria and nucleus. This branch of the tree of life includes all multi-cellular organisms such as fungi, plants, and animals. The other two branches of the tree of life, bacteria and archaea, have never produced multi-cellular organisms despite their great versatility with regard to the substances they can consume and environments they can grow in. Lane describes the evidence that eukaryotes arose from a merger (symbiosis) between bacterial and archaeal organisms. He also proposes that this happened just once in Earth's history. This isn't a new theory but Lane extends it by developing hypotheses about the detailed events in this process, such as the origin of the cell nucleus.

Complex organisms have DNA in two different places, the cell nucleus and the mitochondria. The final section of Lane's book explains the consequences of this, arguing that certain attributes shared by all eukaryotes, such as senescence, and sex are logical consequences of this arrangement. This is because the actions of ordinary, nuclear, genes must be tightly matched to those of mitochondrial genes for the electrochemical gradients in the mitochondria work optimally. This has substantial consequences for human health. Lane argues, for example, that the high frequency of spontaneous miscarriages in people could be the result of occasional mismatches between nuclear and mitochondrial DNA. Another, equally provocative, example is the role of free radicals in health. He proposes that free radicals produced when mitochondria are not functioning optimally may impair health but that anti-oxidant substances such as vitamin C only make things worse by interfering with normal feedback controls.

It is difficult to say who the intended audience is because it isn't either a typical popular science book or an academic treatise. Its style is informal, all terms are carefully explained, and it has many helpful the illustrations. But a sizable fraction of the material is much more challenging than typical popular science books. Many times, I had to slow down and reread sections to make sure I understood the topic at hand. But it isn't an academic work or even a textbook; the kinds of details academic readers want, such as detailed citations, simply aren't there. It would help if you have a general familiarity with college level biology and some chemistry. Having some knowledge of biochemistry might help but it isn't necessary since Lane mostly avoids describing biochemical details.

If you can manage to give this book the careful reading it deserves, you will be amply rewarded with a fresh and intriguing view of the topics at hand.
