Like finding a Gucci purse for cost. Snap it up.

There will always be people who have some valid criticisms of this series. Would a grown woman who is almost 30 ever get away with CONSTANTLY lying that much in life? Would anyone's husband think it's redeeming at the end? Does anyone give in that often to a two year old child? Of course not. These are comedic books not a serious commentary on real relationships. I grew up watching reruns of Lucy Ricardo and combined with my own tendency to shop waaaaay more than I should, I find these books incredibly funny. If how many times I literally laugh out loud during the reading of one is any indication of my enjoyment, this entry into the series is probably my favorite. The part about Becky, her Mum and Janice, discover the British version of "Dollar Tree" for the first time had me cracking up and remembering my own astonishment and bizarre assortment of purchases the first time I went to an, "everything costs a dollar store". (Dangerous places for compulsive shoppers!) I hope the Brandon family keeps growing and shopping for years to come.

Should be called "Becky throws a party" instead

I enjoyed this book more than many other reviewers, but it still loses some of the charm of previous books. The book focuses more on Becky's attempt to throw Luke a surprise party than her relationship with Minnie. The parts that did feature Minnie were fairly annoying. I don't see how anyone could like that child as she was portrayed.

I did see signs that Becky was trying to mend her ways. I really liked that she kept her promise to Luke to not buy herself any new clothes and wear everything she had at least 3 times first. I was hoping she would actually go to the class for shopaholics in the end! Her attempts at bartering were a highlight of the story.

Mostly, the book is still a fun read, though it was a little bit tedious and repetitive at points. It definitely could have been edited down a bit in length.

Dear Amazon, please read to end...

I love my reading experience every time I pick up a Shopaholic book. If you want a literary analysis, it's really not in the "War and Peace" category. When I'm not feeling so great about myself, my lot in life, or I'm too foggy mentally to read anything heavy, I look forward to my next fast read with my friend, Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood). I already know she's going to muck up on a squillion levels, mostly because she's unable to meet her flaws truthfully on a daily basis (she converts true information into lies, then proceeds to act upon the revised truth - over and over and over). I also know that the plot formula is basically there for all to end well, but it works so well on TV (Seinfeld is a good comparison), why not have that box of chocolates waiting there for me to dive into just when I need it most?
Her character does achieve some growth over time (in the series), but is quite consistent for the most part. I love that she eventually agonizes over the predicaments she puts others in, that she has a loyal family and host of friends, and that she's going to make it through so I can reach for a new book that's a trusted, easy-read and entertains me. I can see how others are really annoyed with her character, and have concluded that she and I would not likely be bezzies in reality. It's all brain candy for me, and I'm glad it's there. Thank you Sophie Kinsella for bringing Becky into my life!

I would also like to suggest to Amazon that they offer special discounts for people who write honest reviews. It's almost as if I'm providing free publicity, and it's a great marketing strategy as tons of readers would definitely write more reviews if there was an incentive. For example, who wouldn't buy the next book if they would, maybe, get them each for the same locked-in price they paid for their first Shopaholic book? That is a deal that I could not turn down, when I think of the other things I could buy with that savings.

About the Author
Alan Loy McGinnis (19332005) was a best-selling author, family therapist, business consultant, and popular speaker. After a twenty year career as a minister, he became a counselor and co-founded the Valley Counseling Center in Glendale, CA. In the 1970s, he began researching friendship and authored The Friendship Factor, published by Augsburg Fortress in 1979 and revised in 2004. A popular speaker, he also authored more than fifty articles and several more books, including Bringing Out the Best in People, Confidence, and The Balanced Life, all published by Augsburg Fortress

This book helped change my life...

I know you've heard that phrase before, I know I have. And yet, I did not experience this until after having read this book. I didn't even think I had a problem with confidence, any more than the next person, that is, until I started reading it. McGinnis touches on so many points and issues that many of us have, but do not realize are related to how we view ourselves. He also points out where a lot of our "flaws" are connected to our past AND how we can help change that. "Confidence" teaches you to accept yourself and love yourself. It is a book that approaches this topic from a spiritual and religious perspective (but this not overdone). Reading this book helped me to change my view of myself as well as to move forward from the past and address the emotional issues that were hindering me. I give it 5 stars and I think everyone should read it...I know that I am glad that I did.

Learn to understand your self will take you futher in life

This book is quite challenging for the everyday person. You will learn your weaknesses that are probably really destroying your life. As you begin to read you start to understand what is really happening. This book gets you to understand that self-confidence is the building block of your life and it starts early in life as a newborn. You will learn to focus on your strong points and not your weaknesses. How you view your self as a person and that god creates us all. We all endowed in us remarkable capacities to reach for the maximum. You will learn that comparison causes us to be obsessed with our limitations. So reading this book would change anybody's thought and beliefs of themselves and to be your self.

Advocates Healthy Self-Esteem

Dr. McGinnis writes, "One of the strangest things we observe in therapy is that people who doubt themselves often cannot accept compliments." He prefaces this observation with a call for balance, saying this book is not designed to present an exaggerated look at self-esteem. The other extreme to be avoided is low self-esteem and false modesty. The approach taught in the Bible is to "love your neighbor as you love yourself." That is the balance he advocates.
I love writers who reinforce something I'm already doing. Such is the case with this author who tells his readers to keep a journal. There's other solid advice given such as spend time in solitude, praying and seeking God's Wisdom. We're reminded that we are always in a state of flux and will be as long as we live.
In developing this balanced approach to life even further, he quotes Karl Menninger in saying that to be well-adjusted a healthy person needs a combination of play, love, and work. Yes, work is part of the mix. Self-esteem comes from a sense of purpose. Discovering who God designed you to be is part of life's joyous adventure. He notes, "God's blueprint for us is often written in our natures."
The power of imaging is explained in this book. Like me, he visualized himself becoming a doctor before he finished earning the degree. He describes how faith is an integral part of this imagination process.
Dr. McGinnis successfully brings his discussion to a logical conclusion by talking about the connection between love of self, love of others and love of God. Those, of course, are what sum up the commandments. Jesus told us that. This book adds some substance to that ongoing exploration. Reading it and applying its teachings will enhance your life's quality.

Nuts-and-bolts of a Learning Organisation

This is one of the few books that manage to get into the guts of learning organisations, past conceptual pondering and into nuts-and-bolts of turning the concepts into practices.
The structure of this book is somewhat confusing, as it is easy to lose track of the nested levels of subtitles, with about the same size of headings. Several pages long lists do not make it any easier to remember, what is the actual issue of the chapter in question.
This book is widely used in management courses but I would not require my students to memorize those lengthy lists of connected tidbits. In my opinion this is much more applicable as a thought provoker or even a reference for a manager of an emerging learning organisation.
This is not a bad book, far from it. Especially the use of actual cases to stress the point of each chapter works very well.

Friendship, Love and Loyalty - not showing off and making an impression

I am delighted to add this book to my daughters' library. It's a sweet, kind, tender book about a little girl and her difficult decision to bring a tried & true, very loved doll to a party, even though she has several others which would be sure to impress her friends and win her a prize. This book has no sassy behavior, no inappropriate words, just a gentle story about love and loyalty and being a good, kind friend. It is slightly longer and slower moving than your average picture book, and the pictures are black & white with only a magenta fill, but my three girls (ages 8, 4 & 2) were absolutely captivated and delighted by the story. In this world of Facebook and the Kardashians, I'm thrilled to give my girls a book that teaches the value of loyalty and friendship over showing off and impressing others.

This was my favorite book as a child. I couldn't quite remember the title, but a librarian friend found it for me. I was so thrilled to have it once again. An endearing story your little girl will read again and again.

A Best-Loved Book!

Does anyone else remember this book from when they were growing up? As soon as I saw this one, it brought back memories! I loved the sweet story back then and was so happy to find it for my own daughter. It is a great read aloud and a perfect starting point for conversations about making decisions, feeling comfortable with the consequences of our choices and disregarding the reactions of friends.

The whole story, about a girl and her four dolls, takes place in one afternoon. Betsy needs to choose one doll to bring to a friend's party. According to the invitation, prizes will be awarded to the best dressed, the oldest and the most talented dolls. Betsy has dolls that would do well in all of those areas, but instead of taking them, she chooses Jennifer who is not at all likely to win any awards. Her dress is tattered, she looks older than her years and all she can do is smile. She's not the best in any of the prize categories, but she is the best loved doll. At least that's what Betsy comes to realize when she follows her heart and brings Jennifer to the party.

The illustrations deliver the same sweet and gentle feeling as the text does. Some are in black and white and some have a touch of lavender, but all are beautifully detailed and still appealing today. According to a brief account at the back of the book, the illustrator "wanted the art to reflect the timelessness of the story. So he worked to achieve a period look that was both classic and feminine." I also love the cover with the girl in red, waiting at the front door. She makes you want to open the door and go inside with her!

Love it

Book was delivered timely and well wrapped for protection. This is an excellent source on ethical leadership in today's community of hip hop and changing values. Fluker has done a wonderful job in addressing the loss of credible leaders due to the lack of ethics and compassion for the lest of these. As emerging leaders ethics and civility is one of the cornerstones of effective leadership.

Informative read, recommended

A nice introduction into how experienced (and inexperienced) software tech lead developers perceive the the "Tech Lead" role. It was a relatively short read but very informative. A lot of the contributors were quite open in their experiences and learnings. Reading the book was like chatting to a dozen tech leads all in one sitting. Pat did a great job of tying together all the stories and capturing some key points to make sure none of the valuable lessons were missed.

As the European Union introduces a common currency to world financial markets, Mark Mazower's Dark Continent critically examines the notion of "Europe." The Euro notwithstanding, Mazower argues that the "'Europe' of the European Union may be a promise or a delusion, but it is not a reality." Renouncing the notion of an essential "Europe," Mazower instead explores the conflicts which dominated the continent in the 20th century and the social value systems which informed them.

Mazower orders his examination chronologically, commencing with the collapse of Europe's continental empires following World War I and the initial European experiments in democracy and national self-determination which followed. He continues with analyses of state interventions in family health and the importance of healthy progeny, the financial crisis of the 1920s, the Hitler regime, the transformed democracy that emerged following World War II, the gradual erosion of the social state in the 1980s, and, finally, the collapse of communism. Mazower (Inside Hitler's Greece) shapes his well-written history of Europe's 20th century as a struggle among liberal democracy, communism and fascism. Avoiding the pitfalls of Marxist interpretation on the one hand and capitalist triumphalism on the other, he shows how the failure of liberal democracy after WWI led to the experiment with fascism, which was defeated (principally by the Communists) at an enormous cost. In the first half of this century, he writes, between 60 million and 70 million Europeans died violently in wars or civil unrest, but the figure for the period after the defeat of fascism is under one million. Mazower takes this as evidence that the Cold War was a social and economic, rather than a military, conflict. While this may be true of the Cold War in Europe, the assertion fails to take into account the proxy wars fought by the superpowers in Asia, Africa and Latin America. But this omission doesn't detract from the overall excellence of Mazower's work. The defeat of fascism and the fall of communism have left the field to liberal democracy, which is now faced with the problem it failed to solve in the beginning of the century: how to create a workable relationship between capitalism and representative government. Mazower argues that Europeans can best work this out if they realize that their national differences are greater than any common culture and that Europe has enjoyed its greatest period of peace and prosperity precisely during the period in which it has lost its primacy in world affairs. A masterful account of Europe's cursed century. When the smoke cleared from the ruins of the Second World War, many observers assumed that Europe as it had been known for centuries had come to an end. From the physical destruction of cities to the moral catastrophe of fascism and Nazism, it seemed as though those on the Continent had committed a collective suicide. A new type of warcoldhovered on the horizon, leading some to envision the planets complete and final destruction. But as British historian Mazower (Univ. of Sussex; Inside Hitler's Greece, 1993) makes clear, things werent always like this. The century had begun with high hopes, dashed by the bloody conflict of the Great War. Moreover, Europe's reconstruction and the relatively peaceful close of the Cold War give reason for hope. More insightfully, Mazower stresses that the very concept of ``Europe'' has metamorphosed with startling rapidity over the last hundred years. And this ability to change may well prove to be the continent's saving grace, he avers. The book is organized around the major three-way ideological struggle of the century: that between liberal democracy, fascism, and communism. Both fascism and communism claimed not only to be on the side of history, but also to be offering an end to it. Liberal democracy, the most modest of ideologies, appears to have weathered the storm best. Yet Mazower refuses to offer such platitudes as that liberal democracy ``won'' the Cold War or that weve therefore arrived at historys ``end.'' Instead, as he explains in an epilogue, the task of ``making Europe'' continues to this day. This insightful overview of modern European history was apparently written in the early 1990s and is probably a response to some of the triumphalism that accompanied the collapse of the Soviet Union. One of Mazower's basic points is that European history does not show a teleological progression to the triumph of democracy and liberal capitalism. Mazower opens with the large scale failures in Central and Eastern Europe of the democratic settlements of the Paris Peace Conference. He writes insightfully of the contradictions imposed by the ethnic heterogeneity of Eastern Europe, ideas of community minority rights, the concept of nation-states, and the failures of the League of Nations system to guard minority rights. These strains were paralleled by and exacerbated by the great crisis of liberal capitalism whose most dramatic manifestation was the Great Depression. Against this background, Mazower stresses the major alternatives to traditional liberalism capitalism and democracy, communism and German fascism, were not aberrations but derived from deeply rooted alternative versions of social organization.

Prefiguring his excellent book on the Nazi Empire, Mazower provides a particularly good analysis of the Nazi state and Empire as an alternative path of European history. He stresses also that the Nazis were defeated in large part by the exertions of the Soviet Union, a somewhat ironic outcome in which communism came to the rescue of liberal democracy. Mazower follows with a nice analysis of the opening of the Cold War and the postwar boom, something that occurred in all European states, including those in Eastern Europe under Soviet domination. This boom resulted partly from greater state involvement in the economy and was accompanied by expanding social services that brought considerable social peace. Others, like Tony Judt in his excellent book Postwar, have made this point as well. Mazower concludes with some nice analysis of the problems encountered by European states in the relative stagnant periods of the 1970s and 1980s, and the fall of the Soviet Union. Again, this is a careful analysis that attacks conventional triumphalism.

Read it at least twice

I agree with an earlier reviewer that this is the best history of 20th Century Europe ever. Keen insights and fresh ideas leap off every page.

But it needs to be repeated: the Dark Continent is not an introduction to the subject. Unless you have a good knowledge of Europe and its history, this is not yet the book for you. Someday maybe, but for now save your money.

Some found Mazower's style dry and difficult. I started reading it in a coffee bar and got half-way through before I realized the time. That doesn't happen very often. To me, the writing is clear and fast-moving, and the threads are easy to follow.

Imperialism, colonialism, class, nation, prejudice, fascism, communism, democracy, apathy, capitalism, genocide, left, right, in-between, all are described in a calm, intelligent manner, which is perhaps why some see Mazower as being soft on Stalin or Hitler. You won't find hysteria or hyperbole, but then the facts speak for themselves without the need for comments by the author. Think about it: 60-million people were killed in "civilized" Europe in the first half of the 20th Century. With a story like that, a historian doesn't need to raise his voice to get the readers attention.

A Masterpiece of Coherent History

This is the most coherent presentation of 20th century European history that I have ever read.

The reason that I say this is because it explains more clearly that I have ever read elsewhere the causal connections that integrate what happened in Europe between 1914 and 1998 (the year that Dark Continent was published).

Mark Mazower, the brilliant author of this book, basically sees this entire period through a lens that is primarily, but not exclusively, socio-economic. In his view, to which I am persuaded, socio-economic factors, both good and bad, were for the most part, the driving and controlling factors behind all the mega-events of 20th century Europe.

Consider each of them: World War I, the defeat of Germany, its economic and political collapse, the world wide depression, the rise of communism, fascism and Nazism, World War II, the Cold War, the Balance of Power, the economic socialization of Western Europe, the collapse of the Russian empire, worldwide decolonization, the rise of individualism. What a panoply of cataclysmic events, yet they all had their roots in socio-economic factors. One might say that all of these major movements and events were the result of rising and falling expectations. And, to some extent, all of them were poisoned by utopianisms of various shades and colors.

I recommend this book. It is a gem.

In the books for Buddhist beginners that now crowd the shelves it is common to find explications of the faith's various tenets serving to structure and sometimes to title the works. Typically then, in Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness, Gunaratana, who is the Buddhist chaplain at American University and the president of the Bhavana Society in the Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia, delves into the "Eightfold Path" of understanding, thinking, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration. Each chapter devoted to these efforts explains the wisdom of these skillful pursuits and then closes with a "key points" list to summarize highlights. This work is best suited to readers who are very new to Buddhism or who want a taste of the tradition served in a thoroughly American style. Gunaratana (Mindfulness in Plain English) writes in a very simple form and uses highly accessible illustrations to teach. For example, "Even though unskillful deeds may bring temporary happiness when, for example, a drug dealer is pleased with his shiny new car the Buddha pointed out that wrong actions always lead to harm." Though this book is too elemental for most devoted practitioners and does not particularly distinguish itself among the many of its ilk, it may find a useful berth where many voices and versions are generally desirable.

For those who want to learn more about the Eightfold Path in a very practical way, this book fits the bill. Bhante Gunaratana, author of Mindfulness in Plain English, offers a very down to earth approach to understanding and being able to apply the tenets of the eightfold path which is stated in the Fourth Noble Truth. I have read this book many times and use it in my classes. Highly recommended for beginners and experienced practitioners of insight meditation as well as those who just want to explore.

A solid intro to animation packed with project ideas.

The Moving Image workshop is packed with project ideas that help students with basic animation principles. It has an easy to follow format that is based on teaching concepts as opposed to technical elements or software. Also, it's packed with examples and stills, so I think it should help students visually as they plan their animated works. As a digital media instructor, I find the projects ideas really helpful.
