Thank you, Fr Gabriel!
By Thomas E. Defreitas
Fr Gabriel Harty is known as the Rosary Priest of Ireland. Now 94, he has been active in promoting the Rosary since the 1940s. This enchantingly warmhearted book is a testimony to Fr Harty's lifelong love of the Rosary, as practiced by Roman Catholics, especially by those of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), among whom the Rosary had its genesis. Fr Harty's prose is always accessible, frequently anecdotal, and invariably large-hearted. The book is full of stories about Fr Harty's own experiences promoting industrial rosaries, domestic rosaries, ecumenical rosaries, etc. There are many sound suggestions as to how one might give this prayer the necessary "heart-room" to be truly effective. Father quotes the old traffic sign, Speed Kills, in urging the "lingering pace" (Blessed Paul VI's phrase), the unhurried savouring, most suited to the beads.

There are brief explorations of Marian apparitions: Ftima, Lourdes, and the disputed apparitions at Medjugorje. There is an endorsement of reading Scripture as a necessary means of fortifying one's rosary devotion. There are suggestions for building bridges with those Christians to whom the Rosary is unfamiliar, and even a small collection of testimonies from non-Catholic practitioners of rosary recitation. Fr Harty has said elsewhere that praying with beads is so common among the world's traditions, that any attempt to downgrade or disparage the Rosary is truly "spiritual vandalism." But the dominant tone of "Heaven Sent" is irenic. We enjoy going with Fr Harty from France to Kentucky to the docks of Dublin as he propagates the hallowed devotion.

What makes me recommend this book so highly, above and beyond its impeccable orthodoxy and its evident love of the Rosary, is Fr Harty's own personal cheerfulness as he exposits his theme. Joy is contagious, as a friend of mine recently noted about Pope Francis, and the Irish Dominican has much in common with the Argentine Jesuit! Fr Harty enjoys the Rosary, and after reading "Heaven Sent," you will, too -- if you don't already. I urge anyone reading this review to do yourself a favour and make the acquaintance of this happy Dominican friar -- as has been noted, a true son of Our Lady, Cause of Our Joy and Queen of the Most Holy Rosary.

This man lives the rosary
By Vicki A. Hicks
This is one of the finest books written on the rosary, as it is with all of Fr. Harty's books. He is a true spiritual son of Mary.

Foster Girl, A Memoir, by Georgette Todd

Georgette Todd's mother was shot in the head when she was a small child. Her father was never in the picture and with hardly any available or "appropriate" family members willing to care for Georgette and her baby sister, both girls had no choice but to enter foster care. And that's when life really spun out of control for the Todd sisters. In "Foster Girl, A Memoir," Georgette relives the most traumatic years of her life so to give outsiders an inside, raw and brutally honest look of what happens to homeless children in America when under the state's care. In this unforgettable debut, readers will not only learn how the foster care system works, but will discover what's going on internally when an abused child grows up in a series of stranger's homes and institutions. Edited by Toni Morrison's first book editor, "Foster Girl" is a poignant account of a spirited girl who, despite hating the life she was born into, hopes to survive long enough to create a whole new world for herself after growing up in foster care. "Some stories need to be heard, and Foster Girl is one of them—it’s the honest, heartbreaking, insider’s look at the foster care system we’ve been lacking. I wish Georgette hadn’t had to write this book, but I’m awfully glad she did.” —Janice Erlbaum, acclaimed author of Girlbomb: A Halfway Homeless Memoir Georgette Todd's official website: http://www.georgettetodd.com

Compelling, a sad story with parts to it that may be too hard for people to bear. At the end though, it helps you to reflect on your own life and come to the realization that no matter what you go through, nothing can destroy you.

Raw, honest and insightful - I couldn't put it down
By rawknroll
This is a remarkable book. It's a very raw, brutally honest, and incredibly thoughtful and insightful memoir of Todd's time inside the US foster care system. I loved her voice - at turns vulnerable, confessional, strong, defiant, and spirited. She has endured some really terrible things and while they might be difficult to read, they only serve to better help you understand the depth of her strength, and appreciate how much she truly has accomplished. It's a brave piece of writing from a personal standpoint, and an important piece of writing in terms of how we understand the foster system - a system that essentially punishes children not for doing bad things, but for having bad things done to them. As someone who has lived through the system, and subsequently gone on to work within it and work to reform it, Todd's perspective is about as well-rounded as you're going to get. I knew very little about the foster care system when I picked up this book, and it stuck with me. A real eye-opener.

The Idea of Cultural Heritage, by Derek Gillman

The idea of cultural heritage has become widespread in many countries, justifying government regulation and providing the background to disputes over valuable works of art and architecture. In this book, Derek Gillman uses several well-known cases from Asia, Europe, and the United States to review the competing claims that works of art belong either to a particular people and place, or, from a cosmopolitan perspective, to all of humankind. Noting the importance of cultural roles and narratives in shaping heritage, he looks at the ways in which the idea of heritage has been constructed. He focuses first on Britain and the writings of Edmund Burke and then on China and its medieval debate about the nature of "our culture." Drawing on a range of sources, including the work of Ronald Dworkin, Will Kymlicka, and Joseph Raz, Gillman relates debates about heritage to those in contemporary political philosophy and offers a liberal approach to moral claims and government regulation.

The History of Gardens, by Christopher Thacker

The spirit of a race or an age can be reflected even in the choice and use of plants: with the coming ofZen Buddhism, the Japanese practically ceased to grow flowers in their gardens, an attitude which Le Notre, garden designer ofVersailles, who once said 'flowers are for nursemaids' would doubtless have appreciated. In this fascinating and highly informative book, Christopher Thacker tells the history of gardens from their origins in the 'natural' paradises of Greek myth to the present day.Studying individual gardens or garden topics which are rep~ntative of an age or region, he builds up a comprehensive survey of the gardens and garden theories of an era.Whether Dr Thacker is discussing garden philosophers and designers (Alberti, Mollet, de Vries, Capability Brown, Genrude Jekyll, Russell Page, and many others), or bringing to life the lost gardens of the past, like the Yuan Ming Yuan in Peling, or William Shenstone's the Leasowes, or surveying the weird and mysterious statuary of Bomarzo, his text is always absorbing and authoritative. Profusely illustrated, this book should become a classic on its subject.

Review
"Ancient gardens are imaginatively reconstructed through written descriptions and modern ones are depicted in the numerous illustrations that are the chief glory of the book. . . . A fine survey."--"Library Journal

From the Inside Flap
"Mr Thacker's history will be easy to supplement but almost impossible to excel. As editor of Garden History. . . he is our leading expert on the subject. He writes with scholarship, fluency, and love."--Nigel Nicholson, The Daily Telegraph"Tom Carter's history of the Victorian garden is for those whose appetite has already been whetted, perhaps by Thacker. Carter provides fascinating details, intriguing for their own sake and for their insight into the English society of the time. Though both books may lack the charm and wit of others' efforts at garden history, such as Ronald King's "The Quest for Paradise," they add nicely to the garden bookshelf."--Tom Carter, Los Angeles Times

An enlightened walk in historical gardens
By Heather Sanft
Christopher Thacker would be a delight to meet in any historically significant garden. Thacker's luscious use of writings and poetry interspersed with historical detail and visuals give the reader a lavishly satisfying overview of the history of gardens.

This book enriches our knowledge of cultural diversity and the exciting significant historical figures who lay hidden in the gardens. Thacker inspires us to go explore the garden with all our senses like appreciating the look, bouquet, taste and personality of a fine fruit wine.

By Aristotle Dipteron
THE HISTORY OF GARDENS is a very readble book. I have read only four chapters, but appreciate Thacker's style of writing and, especially, I appreciate that Thacker carefully explains horticultural and architectural terms. THE HISTORY OF GARDENS should be the first book read by anyone who wants to learn about the history of garden styles. This is not a book about growing garden plants, but rather is a book about the different garden designs and how plants are used to achieve those designs.

New viral diseases are emerging continuously. Viruses adapt to new environments at astounding rates. Genetic variability of viruses jeopardizes vaccine efficacy. For many viruses mutants resistant to antiviral agents or host immune responses arise readily, for example, with HIV and influenza. These variations are all of utmost importance for human and animal health as they have prevented us from controlling these epidemic pathogens. This book focuses on the mechanisms that viruses use to evolve, survive and cause disease in their hosts. Covering human, animal, plant and bacterial viruses, it provides both the basic foundations for the evolutionary dynamics of viruses and specific examples of emerging diseases.

* NEW - methods to establish relationships among viruses and the mechanisms that affect virus evolution
* UNIQUE - combines theoretical concepts in evolution with detailed analyses of the evolution of important virus groups
* SPECIFIC - Bacterial, plant, animal and human viruses are compared regarding their interation with their hosts

Review of the previous edition:
"...this book...is a detailed account of current thinking on virus evolution... Because of the diversity of subjects, this book gives an up to date picture of research in various fields of virology, and helps to tease out connections between these fields. The subjects covered are essential reading for virologists but also have direct relevance for molecular biologists, and indeed any researchers with interests in early evolution... This publication is highly recommended for its breadth of coverage and detailed treatments of the various subjects"--TODAY'S LIFE SCIENCE (February 2001)

The Streets of Town, by John Gardner

September, 1940.

Chaos and mistrust reign as the terrifying Blitz begins.

Detective Sergeant Suzie Mountford is back with a brand new case in the London suburb of Camford.

After a local restaurant owner, Carlo Falconetti, has his fingers broken mysteriously and a local punter, Buller Belcher, is found dead, supposedly murdered by a group of drunk military men, WDS Suzie Mountford is assigned the case.

But something doesn’t add up and Mountford’s attention is turned to the Balvak twins, Connie and Conrad, who appear more and more suspicious and lethal than ever.

Camford’s bars and clubs are run by the notorious gangster twins and their criminal activities have given them a dangerous reputation.

Their notable cronies are just as deadly; Shady Porky Pine, Matthew 'Newcastle' Brown and the Trinity Building Co. trio , Dave, Dick and Derek, are causing a storm.

The Balvak’s cut throat justice and mob rules apply to even their closest companions.

When they discover that their right hand man and accountant Little Nell is stealing money from them, his life is in serious danger…

Mountford must navigate her way through a web of corruption and misleading evidence while protecting and hiding a witness of the murder, a terrified waitress named Sybil.

With the help of her lover Tommy Livermore, Suzie must uncover the truth and bring the Balvak twins to justice.

But is Tommy and Suzie’s relationship put in jeopardy when Tommy visits the beautiful Molly Abelard?

How will Suzie cope with the office politics in the police department and complications in her love life?

And who is the mysterious Ghoul that only appears late at night to retrieve the dead from the wreckage?

What connection does this spirit have to the case? Will his strange appearances aid Suzie before she runs out of time...?

Before coming an author of fiction in the early 1960’s, John Gardner was variously a stage magician, a Royal Marine officer and a journalist. In all Gardner has fifty-four novels to his credit, including ‘Maestro’, which was the New York Times book of the year. He was also invited by Ian Fleming’s literary copyright holders to write a series of continuation James Bond novels, which proved to be so successful that instead of the contracted three books he went on to publish some fourteen titles, including ‘Licence Renewed’ and ‘Icebreaker’. Having lived in the Republic of Ireland, the United States and the UK, John Gardner sadly died in August of 2007 having just completed his third novel in the Moriarty trilogy, Conan Doyle’s eponymous villain of the Sherlock Holmes series.

From Publishers Weekly
Fine atmospherics partly redeem a shaky plot in Gardner's second entry in his Suzie Mountford series (after 2002's Bottled Spider), set in WWII London. Det. Sergeant Mountford seeks to advance her career by tackling gangsters who have supplemented their usual rackets with a variety of black market swindles aimed at dulling the pain of government-mandated rationing. In order to nail a corrupt superior she suspects of working hand in glove with the most vicious and powerful villains-twins who seem to foreshadow the historic brothers Kray-she fakes a breakup with her aristocratic lover to arrange a reassignment to Soho. Once in position, she diligently enlists a network of informants to probe for any chinks in the twins' armor and plots to seize any opportunity to find a witness willing to testify to their brutalities. In the background, a necrophiliac serial killer, the Ghoul, preys on victims of the intermittent German bombing runs. Unfortunately, the Ghoul flies so far below the radar that neither Mountford or any of her colleagues in the force are aware that he is even at work until the story's end, where several key strands of the book unravel. Most notably, the street-smart and independent Mountford becomes a passive victim not once but twice, in ways that seem only gratuitous. These flaws mar a decent police thriller that makes little pretense to having any mystery elements, but that nicely evokes wartime London and the seamy underworld that thrived amid patriotic sacrifice.

From Booklist
Gardner, author of more than 40 novels, including the continuation of Ian Fleming's James Bond series, offers up another cunningly plotted mystery featuring London policewoman Suzie Mountford. Set in 1941, the tale perfectly captures the mood of post-Blitz London: strict rationing, bombed-out homes, and thousands of families torn apart by the war. But it's crime-ridden, Mob-run Soho on which Gardner focuses. WDS Suzie Mountford is sent undercover by Scotland Yard detective Tommy Livermore, also Suzie's lover, to find the link between the Balvak Twins, who control Soho's brothels and nightclubs, and corrupt police inspector Tony "Big Toe" Harvey. Gardner conjures up an inventive plot, intriguing characters, and a spunky heroine in this suspenseful foray into London's postwar underworld. An enthusiastic thumbs-up for this fine combination of atmosphere and suspense. Emily Melton

This book should be better known.
By Dr. Fred R. Eichelman
I am amazed and honored to be the first to review "The Streets of Town" by John Gardner for Amazon. I'm amazed as this series of books, that began with "Bottled Spider", should have been at the top of any list of mysteries and thrillers. I feel honored as I consider John Gardner the very top in his field.

"The Streets of Town" follows the further adventures of Scotland Yard's WDS Suzie Mountford. Again the author gives us beautifully detailed plotting with sub plots galore. There are more surprises than a Hitchcock film and the characterizations are supreme. In this adventure we have a unique picture of the London underworld with the back drop of World War Two in 1941. The description and the dialogue of criminal characters is more colorful than a Damon Runyan tale and definitely more grim and deadly. Suzie has to overcome the prejudice against women who took the place of men as police officers during the war and therefore has to out Sherlock other detectives using her own unique abilities.

If this is your first look at the series you will want to read "Bottled Spider" and the two (three before long) that follow this one. If you have never read any books by John Gardner, then now is the time to start as you have missed a great deal.

I will admit that the Suzie Mountford books may appear at first glance as being geared to an English readership, something that may be new to some American readers. However, that is one of the things that makes this series so distinctive and you will find that the vernacular, some of the the terms, can be sorted out when you consider the whole text and you use your imgaination. John Gardner wants us to feel the texture of the times in London, to understand what life was like in this city at this particular period of history.

Exceptionall book
By Srdjan Pesic
The late John Gardner, a writer of long and distinguished career, finished his exceptionall opus with the series of 5 novels featuring Det. Sgt Suzie Mountford, set in wartime London.
The first two books that I've read are real gems. The tantalizing atmosphere of foggy, wounded London, the flesh and blood characters that almost leap at us from the pages, the wicked sense of humor-it is all perfect. Mr. Gardner gives a whole new spin on wartime London. It wasn't just the amazing courage and sacrifice of the British people. There was a lot of money to be made, gangsters, hookers, booze and if you had the dough you could buy anything you dreamt of. That slimy, violent London and its heros and villains, make you grieve when the book is finished. I have three more books left, and I will relish them slowly and sparingly.

The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness, by Simon Wiesenthal

While imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp, Simon Wiesenthal was taken one day from his work detail to the bedside of a dying member of the SS. Haunted by the crimes in which he had participated, the soldier wanted to confess to-and obtain absolution from-a Jew. Faced with the choice between compassion and justice, silence and truth, Wiesenthal said nothing. But even years after the war had ended, he wondered: Had he done the right thing? What would you have done in his place? In this important book, fifty-three distinguished men and women respond to Wiesenthal's questions. They are theologians, political leaders, writers, jurists, psychiatrists, human rights activists, Holocaust survivors, and victims of attempted genocide in Bosnia, Cambodia, China, and Tibet. Their responses, as varied as their experiences of the world, remind us that Wiesenthal's questions are not limited to events of the past. Often surprising and always thought-provoking, The Sunflower will challenge you to define your beliefs about justice, compassion, and human responsibility.

Amazon.com Review
Author Simon Weisenthal recalls his demoralizing life in a concentration camp and his envy of the dead Germans who have sunflowers marking their graves. At the time he assumed his grave would be a mass one, unmarked and forgotten. Then, one day, a dying Nazi soldier asks Weisenthal for forgiveness for his crimes against the Jews. What would you do? This important book and the provocative question it poses is birthing debates, symposiums, and college courses. The Dalai Lama, Harry Wu, Primo Levi, and others who have witnessed genocide and human tyranny answer Wiesenthal's ultimate question on forgiveness.

From Library Journal
In this 1976 volume, divided into two sections, Wiesenthal tackles the question of the possibilities and limits of forgiveness. The first part relates the story of how Wiesenthal, as a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp, was brought before a dying SS trooper, who explained his actions and asked for forgiveness, which Wiesenthal could not bring himself to bestow. In the second section, Wiesenthal presents the story to an array of leading intellectuals and asks, "What would you have done?" This edition contains all the original responses plus additional ones from Primo Levi, Cynthia Ozick, Albert Speer, and others. Heavy stuff.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review
"In simple yet elegant prose, Wiesenthal recreates the grim reality of a time when Eastern Europe was hell. Never lapsing into the maudlin or self-pitying, his matter-of-fact realism makes the images all the more horrifying." ---Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Forgiveness versus Absolution
By Diane
I think in Christian theology there is a difference between human forgiveness and Divine absolution.
Only God can provide absolution because only God actually knows the heart - whether the person has truly repented or not.
What we are asked to do when told to forgive seventy times seven, I think, is to let go of the anger, hurt, and desire for revenge and give it to God. At that point, we can also receive healing from God - which may take some time to truly absorb. Then we are told to pray for those who have hurt us.

Thought provoking
By schoolmarm
[The Sunflower : On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness] by [Simon Wiesenthal] was a simply tender and thought provoking book. Simon Wiesenthal (famous Nazi-hunter) spent time in Auschwitz and Mauthusen before being liberated. While at Auschwitz he was sent to the hospital bed of a young, dying SS officer. This officer asked Wiesenthal to forgive him, although they personally had no contact with each other. The SS officer needed to be forgiven before he died. Wiesenthal did not forgive him, by keeping his silence. This young, 22 year old SS officer also gave Wiesenthal his mother's address and wanted him to tell his mother that he loved her. This always haunted Wiesenthal and years later he writes about it. Was it his place to forgive this Nazi for all Jewry? Did he have the authority or the right to do so? He visited the mother 4 years after the war and again, kept silent when the mother said, "He (SS officer) was such a good son." Again, Wiesenthal has pangs of conscience. The answer is never resolved. The second half of the book are the opinions of theologians and other philosophers on what they would have done in Wiesenthal's situation. Very interesting reading.

Would you forgive the Nazi perpetrator?
By Claudia Moscovici
Would you forgive the Nazi perpetrator? The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal

The Sunflower is a philosophical narrative about moral responsibility and the possibility—and limits--of forgiveness of genocide. In this parable, the narrator describes his hellish daily existence in the Lemberg concentration camp. The story reflects, in some respects, Wiesenthal’s own experience in several Nazi concentration camps during WWII: including Janowska, Plaszow and Mauthausen. Although the narrative shies away from vivid descriptions of violence, it alludes to the sadistic mistreatment of Jewish inmates by SS officers as well as to the starvation, disease and constant threat of being shot or selected for the crematorium that were part and parcel of the daily horrors experienced by inmates. The book, originally published by Schocken Books in 1976, has been taught for decades in schools as an introduction to the Holocaust. Written in a simple yet elegant prose, The Sunflower has been especially popular because it raises the important questions about moral responsibility for national crimes and explores the victims’ capacity for forgiveness. The latter point was particularly relevant to Wiesenthal, who spent years of his life tracking down Nazi fugitives and bringing them to trial for their crimes against humanity.
In a moment of rare beauty in his somber existence in the concentration camp, the narrator, a Jewish prisoner on his way to forced labor, sees a row of sunflowers planted on Christian soldiers’ graves. In a poetic scene, the narrator describes how he’s initially enthralled by the flowers’ beauty, only to be later struck by its implications: “I stared spellbound. The flower heads seemed to absorb the sun’s rays like mirrors and draw them down into the darkness of the ground as my gaze wandered from the sunflower to the grave… It was gaily colored and butterflies fluttered from flower to flower. … Were they whispering something to each flower to pass on to the soldier below? Yes, this was just what they were doing; the dead were receiving light and messages” (The Sunflower, Simon Wiesenthal, New York: Schocken Books, 1998, 14). As he overcomes his awe, he realizes that, as a Jewish prisoner, he’ll be deprived of dignity not only in life, but also in death. He’ll be shot and tossed into a mass grave or gassed and incinerated. For him, as for millions of other Jewish prisoners, “No sunflower would ever bring light into my darkness, and no butterflies would dance above my dreadful tomb” (15).
When the narrator arrives at work, where he’s charged with throwing away medical waste, a nurse signals him to follow her to a hospital bed. There the narrator sees a man enveloped in bandages, pale and rail thin. As this man addresses him with great difficulty, the narrator realizes that the dying man is a young German SS officer: a mortal enemy. Astonishingly enough, the officer begs for his forgiveness for what he’s done to other Jewish people. He doesn’t excuse his behavior, but he describes some of its causes. He tells him about the Nazi indoctrination when he was in Hitler Youth. He speaks of the manuscripts and speeches that depicted Jews as a “subhuman race” and called for their annihilation, which he later encountered in his training as an SS officer. He also speaks of being subjected to tremendous peer pressure from fellow soldiers as well yielding to the pressure of following orders from his superiors.
And yet, now that he’s about to die, he feels a sense of responsibility and guilt for his murderous acts against defenseless civilians. He confesses that he was part of an SS brigade that hunted Jews down, forced dozens of them—defenseless men, women and children--into a house, then tossed hand grenades into the windows to kill all of them. Some people jumped, while on fire, from the broken windows. Still haunted by this vivid memory, the SS soldier can’t expire in peace without some kind of atonement from a Jew: from a member of the group he and other soldiers victimized. The narrator is surprised by the request and paralyzed by indecision. He doesn’t know how to respond.
When he returns to the camp that evening, he tells his friends about this strange encounter. Adam, an architect, finds the SS soldier’s request preposterous—and trivial—given that the Nazis were murdering millions of Jews. One less Nazi, he states cynically. Josek, a deeply religious Jew, maintains that he’d have refused the pardon with a clear conscience. How could his friend have forgiven atrocities of such a magnitude? And who was he to speak for millions of other victims? Both friends remain suspicious: Why would the “Aryan Superman” need the forgiveness of an “inferior” Jew? The narrator, however, sees the dying SS soldier as a fellow human being. “The SS man’s attitude toward me was not that of an arrogant superman. Probably I hadn’t successfully conveyed all my feelings: a subhuman condemned to death at the bedside of an SS man condemned to death…” (67). Of course, their circumstances were far from symmetrical. In fact, they were diametrically opposed. Still unsure of his own ethical stance, the narrator asks each of us, readers, to ask ourselves: If faced with the Nazi soldier’s dying request for forgiveness, “What would I have done?” (98)
If we read the transcripts of the Nazi leaders put on trial, we see that this question of forgiveness doesn’t come up often for the perpetrators: at least not in the public trials. Adolf Eichmann or Rudolf Hoss, for instance, express no regret or compunction for their crimes. They deny all sense of personal responsibility and blame only the Nazi system and their superiors for their murderous deeds. Yet for the victims, the question is extremely relevant because it asks them to consider at least some of the perpetrators as human: as men capable of guilt and regret for their crimes.
Wiesenthal’s simple moral parable shows the Nazis as a diverse group who nevertheless behaved the same way. Not every SS soldier hated Jews. Not every SS soldier was a ruthless sadist. Not every SS soldier gladly followed orders to butcher innocent people. Yet almost every SS soldier chose, like the man in The Sunflower, to follow such orders, to commit such crimes. Almost every SS soldier killed countless innocent Jews. How could this happen? Understanding what forces were at play to make genocide possible doesn’t mean forgiving perpetrators or exonerating them of blame. But without a sociological, and historical, understanding of how tens of thousands of German citizens—some of whom were ordinary men, like the soldier in this story--were capable of such atrocities, we are likely to overlook the vulnerability of our own times.

A textbook on Terrorism
By Yehoram Gordon
The book is a thorough review of the differnet aspects of terrorism, and as such it fits as an undergraduate textbook on the subject. Combs reviews the history of terrorism, different types of terrorism, and how people and governmnets dealt with this phenomenon during the years.
The book is written is a clear and communicative style, and each chapter ends with several issues for indepth thinking and discussion.
The relatively small size of the book, the clarity and exhaustiveness of its coverage of terrorism make it attractive to a busy student who wishes to learn about terrorism but has very little time to spend on such study. I truely think the book merits 5 point especially compared to other material written on this subject these days.

Excellent Book
By Smith, JR
I am a prior student of Cindy Combs and have studied terrorism for over 5 years. I own both a copy of the 3rd and 4th edidtions and can say without a doubt the book provides an excellent introduction to the study of terrorism. I have read reviews concerning the book and must say that the information is outdated, but it is meant as a guideline. The book is best used in conjunction with the Encyclopedia of Terrorism and the Terrorism Readers (aka governement reports on activity and News articles concerning recent actions).

Too many errors
By Chris
There are too many factual errors in this book. Also, there is too much emphasis on events and groups that were relevant in the 1970's through the 1990's, but no longer are important.

Page 47: Timothy McVeigh was not a member of a militia in Michigan. The author also has him confused with Eric Rudolph whose mother involved him in the Christian Identity Movement. McVeigh parents divorced when he was 10 and McVeigh was raised by his father. Co-defendant Terry Nichols was alleged to have had a relationship with the Michigan Militia.

Page 55: The "doomed September 11 flights" were not engaged in trying to "talk down" the hijackers. The pilots were immediately set upon and killed with box cutters. There were no negotiations.

Page 59: "the emergence of terrorism needs three ingredients: a disaffected individual, and enabling group...." Lone Wolf terrorists do not need an enabling group.

Page 64:..."The characteristics that O'Ballance suggests of sophistication and education are less true of post-1970s terrorists than they were of terrorists prior top that time." This is not so when you factor that the internet has created a cadre of high tech, computer savvy terrorists with understanding of how to create and use WMDs.

Page 169: "In the hijacking of TWA 847...the captain of the plane was transmitting information to authorities on the ground. The hijackers killed the Captain. The press was free and the cost was the life of the pilot." The pilot was not killed during this event. Captain John Testrake died of cancer in 1996.

Page 189: "There are accounts, for example, suggesting that certain local British commanders in 1769 planned to give to the native Americans, as a peace offering blankets from a military hospital..." This happened in 1763 at Ft. Pitt.

Page 193: "Puerto Rican nationalists have been active for more than four decades...In addition to the Matcheteros...and Omega 7 operated in the United States." Omega 7 was an anti Castro group, not a Puerto Rican Nationalist group.

Page 193: "This ambivalence is compounded by the strategic importance placed on Puerto Rico by the U.S. military which continues to use portions of the territory for target practice..." No, Vieques Island was used for Navy bombing runs but closed in 2003 after Puerto Rican protests.

Page 200: "The Montana Freemen militia group received considerable attention after the Oklahoma City bombing attack by Timothy McVeigh, who had been a member of this group." Timothy McVeigh was not a member of the Montana Freemen.

There are more errors, but I grow tired.
