About the Author
Sandra N. Elbaum was an ESL Instructor at Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, for thirty-six years. She has also taught in elementary and high schools, and in Mexico, Puerto Rico, the former Soviet Union, and Slovakia. Sandy is the author of the popular series Grammar in Context, now in its Fifth Edition. Sandy received her B.A. in Spanish and M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois.

Judi A. Peman has a B.A. in Spanish Education and an M.A. in Linguistics, both from the University of Illinois. She has taught ESL to both high school students and adults for over 30 years. Currently, she is a teacher emeritus at Truman Community College in Chicago. Judi has presented workshops in basic reading and writing at various professional conferences. She has also taught and trained teachers in both Spain and China. Judi is the author/co-author of 3 ESL text books.

Eschewing both left-wing political clich�s and stereotyped opinions derived from the 1960s civil rights era, Adolph Reed Jr. has forged his own intellectual path. In this impressive collection of essays, Reed turns his keen intellect on a variety of issues, many of which revolve around the decline of the American Left since the '60s and the rise of race-based demagogues like Louis Farrakhan. He also examines what he sees as the hopeless nihilism expressed in hip-hop music, debunks the belief that black anti-Semitism is on the rise, and analyzes the phenomenon of black intellectuals acting as cultural gatekeepers for whites all the way back to Booker T. Washington. A political science professor at New York City's New School of Social Research and the author of W.E.B. Du Bois and American Political Thought and Stirrings in the Jug, Reed confronts fellow thinkers such as Robin D.G. Kelley, William Julius Wilson, and others on the topic of American poverty in a firm, though respectful, way. Reed has carefully observed what has been going on in the United States for nearly 35 years and is capable of expressing cultural highs and lows with admirable clarity and sensitivity. Reed (The Jesse Jackson Phenomenon) doesn't have much patience with what he views as the mushy liberals of the Democratic Party and black intellectuals like Michael Dyson and Cornel West. In these essays (most of which have appeared in publications such as the Progressive and the Village Voice), Reed offers his bracing opinions on race and politics in the 1990s from a "left-critical perspective." Black "leadership" substitutes for popular mobilization, he argues, while nostalgia for black unity under segregation falsifies the past and serves reactionary interests. He finds consonance between the black establishment and Louis Farrakhan in that they consider the inner-city poor "morally defective," and contends that the white Left won't confront the complexity of black politics ("They simply do not see political differences among black people"). In perhaps the most memorable essay, Reed pungently analyzes what he calls the "crisis of black intellectual [life]" (in which a "lucky few," West and Henry Louis Gates Jr., for instance, direct themselves more to a white audience than to blacks). The author, a leader in the nascent Labor Party, values the primacy of class politics over so-called cultural or identity politics ("If we don't organize on a class basis, we'll be picked off one at a time, as we were with 'welfare reform' "), preferring "real" class politics, based on people's daily lives. But his snapshots of such organizing based on class are too briefly presented for readers to evaluate. Similarly, his forceful but too-brief argument against stigmatizing the "underclass" ("poor people are just like everyone else") invites a deeper critique of the work of those (e.g., Nicholas Lemann) whom he attacks.

Reed, who teaches African American studies and political science at the University of Illinois, Chicago, has long been a provocative contributor to the national conversation about race. Many of this volume's 30 essays are drawn from Reed's columns in The Progressive and The Village Voice. In the section "Issues in Black Public Life," Reed addresses segregation, anti-Semitism, the lack of a black political movement, O. J. Simpson, and Louis Farrakhan. In "Equality and Ideology in American Politics," he considers the black underclass, family values and welfare reform, and Herrnstein and Murray's The Bell Curve. In "The Question of Practice," Reed looks back at the Brown decision and at New Orleans' controversial Liberty Monument, examines ethnic studies in the academic world, and discusses "building solidarity." At the center of Reed's analysis is his belief that "understanding American politics and organizing effectively to operate within it require recognizing the centrality of class forces and dynamics in shaping consciousness and establishing both lines of cleavage and possibilities for solidarity." Well Argued

Highly recommended reading whether you agree with the author or not. A revealing quote from this book: "I do not want to hear another word about drugs or crime without hearing in the same breath about decent jobs, adequate housing and egalitarian education." Those are all addressed together, from the opposing point of view, in Heather MacDonald's "The Burden of Bad Ideas." Read them together and form your own opinion as to the cause of failure in urban America. Reed argues well but I think MacDonald wins in this debate.

Forceful and Honest

"Class Notes" should be read by everyone, especially those who identify with the left and care about the state of black politics. Reed maintains that he is toward the statist end of the left and he debunks the current conservative ideology that "Big government" is a failure. But Reed saves his best ammunition for so-called black leaders and intellectuals such as Louis Farrakhan,Jesse Jackson,Cornel West,and Henry Louis Gates Jr. In order for any progressive movement to succeced it needs to be class-based, but with a concern for those still suffering discrimination. This book is essential reading.

Adolph Reed looks at issues, getting past media representations and demagoguery to consistently, doggedly return the reader to the fact that poverty is not the fault of the poor, and the only way to improve things is to do the hard work of organizing active political bodies and force change. He is succinct, accurate, and appropriately scathing. Give this book to someone who gets their politics via the major media; it should at least make him or her angry.

Judith S. Beck, PhD, is President of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy (www.beckinstitute.org), which provides state-of-the-art training in CBT and offers online courses on a variety of CBT topics, including Essentials of CBT: The Beck Approach. She is also Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She has written nearly 100 articles and chapters as well as several books for professionals and consumers; has made hundreds of presentations, nationally and internationally, on topics related to CBT; and is the codeveloper of the Beck Youth Inventories and the Personality Belief Questionnaire. Dr. Beck is a founding fellow and past president of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.

It is helpful especially if you are interested in CBT.

At first, I received a damaged book, but they replaced it to a brand new/good condition right away.
(Thank Amazon and the company for that.)

A lot of good examples and make a MHP to re-think what might be missing or to understand possible thinking process of a client/patient.
Especially when you are dealing a difficult or not progressing situation, this book might be a good resource to read up!

Challenging problems

I really liked this book written by one of the best known cognitive therapists in the country. . . .perhaps only her father is a better known cognitive therapist. It is very beneficial to read how Dr. J. Beck approaches challenging problems that arise during therapy. The case examples she gives can give a therapist insight into haow a master therapist works.

Although I liked virtually everything in the book, I particularly liked the chapter on dealing with problems that patients with axis II disorders present. The author also identifies some typical therapist reactions to the challenging problems that some clients exhibit.

I will kepp this book as a reference for a very long time

Great, but a few complants.

So, let's star off with complants. First of all, when you said that when Obi-Wan said that Anakin was great pilot when he met him, he was correct. Thats my only complant. Now I loved the book. If I had to pick which was better, I would pick sith. Keep making the Star Wars books. I recomend this book for Star Wars fans. :)
