While many self-help books purport to tell readers how to find happiness, few such titles can claim to be based on any scientifically valid, large-scale studies. One of the happy exceptions was University of Chicago psychologist Csikszentmihalyi's Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (LJ 3/15/90). There the author published the results of studies using the Experience Sampling Method (ESM), in which he found that people were happiest when most absorbed in their actions, a state the author termed flow. The current book (part of Basic's series purporting to present "a crystallization of a lifetime's work and thought" by noted scholars) presents similar material, but with an emphasis slightly shifted toward practical applications of the ESM findings. Public librarians should check their shelves: if their copies of Flow are tattered or nonexistent, they should definitely buy this new title; if they have a decent copy of the older book, this is still a recommended purchase. Over four centuries, Africans and their descendants―both free and enslaved―participated in the political, social, and cultural movements that indelibly shaped their countries’ colonial and post-independence pasts. Yet until very recently Afro-Latin Americans were conspicuously excluded from narratives of their hemisphere’s history.

George Reid Andrews seeks to redress this damaging omission by making visible the past and present lives and labors of black Latin Americans in their New World home. He cogently reconstructs the Afro-Latin heritage from the paper trail of slavery and freedom, from the testimonies of individual black men and women, from the writings of visiting African-Americans, and from the efforts of activists and scholars of the twentieth century to bring the Afro-Latin heritage fully into public view.

While most Latin American countries have acknowledged the legacy of slavery, the story still told throughout the region is one of “racial democracy”―the supposedly successful integration and acceptance of African descendants into society. From the 1970s to today, black civil rights movements have challenged that narrative and demanded that its promises of racial equality be made real. They have also called for fuller acknowledgment of Afro-Latin Americans’ centrality in their countries’ national histories. Afro-Latin America brings that story up to the present, examining debates currently taking place throughout the region on how best to achieve genuine racial equality.

Excellent Modern Review of Categorical Data Analysis

An excellent job done by the authors. As with the first edition, Powers and Xie make the analysis of categorical data easy to understand. There are 7 chapters that are clearly written, begining with a review of simple linear regression, then going to loglinear models for contingency tables, models for ordinal and nominal dependent variables and models for event ocurrence (models for rates). The technical level is high enough to understand the theory behind the analysis and the interpretation of results. The inclusion of a new chapeter (ch.5) on multilevel models is very clearly written, and includes a short introduction to modern Bayesian modelling. Although there is not enough space for a complete introduction into this topic (which requires a high level of mathematical statistics) the authors refer to other books (like the one by Scott Lynch) for more detailed explanations (needed for a better understanding) of bayesian modelling in general. This book is a great addition to the library of students and scientists in areas like biology and sociology who want an explained compendium of (modern) techniques for analysing categorical data.
