THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

‘If you have the slightest interest in unidentified flying objects, you owe it to yourself to read what Nick Pope has to say.’
The Independent

‘A provocative book, written in a reasoned, dispassionate manner.’
Review of Books

An overview of the UFO mystery, written by the man who used to run the British Government’s UFO project.

This is a true insider’s account of the phenomenon, and lifts the lid not just on classic cases like Roswell and the Rendlesham Forest incident, but on less well known cases too.

This groundbreaking and highly controversial book highlights cases from the US, the UK, and the rest of the world, and Nick draws on his first-hand government experience to reveal what the authorities really know and think about UFOs, alien abductions, crop circles and animal mutilations.

Open Skies Closed Minds was featured on Newsnight, serialised in the Daily Mail and reached number three in the hardback non-fiction list, staying in the top ten for ten weeks.

From Booklist
If Pope is correct, Earth is currently in the middle of an interplanetary war. He claims that while he was stationed at the "UFO Desk" of Britain's Ministry of Defense, he studied UFO sightings as well as crop circles and cattle mutilations--all of which led him to the conclusion that the aliens are here, and they aren't friendly. He believes it is time the British government and the world in general rally to confront the invaders. The author openly compares himself to Fox Mulder of TV's X-Files in his struggles to bring forth the hidden evidence of the security danger to planet Earth. This work, which originally was published in England and was a best-seller there, is one for the true believers. Although numerous incidents are cited, actual evidence is lacking, and logic is often absent from the author's arguments. Nevertheless, the topic is perennially popular, and Pope's belief in UFOs will attract attention. Eric Robbins

From Kirkus Reviews
As a career civil servant with Britain's Ministry of Defence, Pope served a three-year stint in the early 1990s as chief investigator of UFO sightings in the United Kingdom. He began as a skeptic and ended up a true believer. This book, a bestseller in Britain, attempts to explain his conversion but does a poor job of it. Fully a third of the book is spent discussing what is by now a familiar litany of UFO-related phenomena: Roswell, Area 51, the US Air Force ``Blue Book'' of UFO investigations, etc. Pope's own work consisted mainly of investigating alleged sightings of UFOs, crop circles (huge, symmetrical designs mysteriously created in open fields), and cattle slaughters (aliens apparently like hamburgers). Slim as this investigative work is, and even though, as he himself admits, there is no proof of the existence of UFOs, Pope still insists that ``there is a war going on'' with aliens. To make matters worse, he contends, we aren't even aware that this war is happening. He also assures us that 95 percent of UFO sightings go unreported, though his only evidence for this is that private UFO groups have said so. Still, the book is blessedly free of the paranoia found in so much of the UFO writing done in the US. For Pope, the government of Britain is not engaged in a conspiracy to cover up the existence of UFOs (as some believe about the US government); it just hasn't bothered to do much investigating. He can also be lyrical, such as when describing the joy and wonder of visitors within a crop circle. But he can also turn around and be facile and trite. On the connection between aliens and ghosts he concludes, ``The spirit world is highly complicated.'' One would suppose this to be true. An odd, unconvincing statement of belief from a government official. (8 pages b&w photos) -- Copyright 1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

An Extraordinarily Important Book
By A Customer
This book should be required reading for anyone even mildly interested in UFOs. In this book, Pope tells us the story of what he himself calls his three year "voyage of discovery" during which he came to the conclusion that the "Extraterrestrial Hypothesis" was the best (and, possibly, the only) explanation for the twenty percent or so of cases that could not be explained otherwise.
To come to this conclusion, however, Pope had to start with an "open mind." Given the title, the reader should be instantly aware that this is not the way most of officialdom approaches this topic. But, Pope does something most Civil Servants would never do: he takes his new responsibility as the Ministry of Defense's (MoD's) UFO Desk Officer SERIOUSLY! He reads into the topic (which shows up clearly in his knowledge of the history of the phenomenon). To extend his capability to investigate sightings, He develops good relations with civilian UFO investigation groups like the British UFO Research Association (BUFORA) and QUEST International, and actually shares data with them. Not only that, but Pope actually tries to help and comfort witnesses and abductees. When he says "I'm with the Ministry and I'm here to help you," he actually means it!
So, what we have thus far is an MoD Civil Servant who, after three years of dealing with civilian and military close encounters, has come to the conclusion that some significant percentage of these events involve extraterrestrial craft piloted by some form of extraterrestrial intelligence. I cannot stress how important this publically stated conclusion is. It has, insofar as I can tell, happened only once before and that was in the first edition of Edward Ruppelt's book "The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects." In that case, though, so much pressure was placed on Ruppelt's employer that he was forced very quickly to write a second edition with a new chapter that contradicted the conclusion of the previous edition. So far, at least, no such pressure has been placed on Nick Pope. And, that, too, is also extraordinary.
Also like Ruppelt, Pope seems unaware that there may be a UFO cover-up going on in the UK. As we finally learned in America, the best cases never went to Blue Book. Instead, they went directly to Air Intelligence Service Squadrons. And, there is evidence that the best cases in the U.K. did not go to Mr. Pope's office at Whitehall but, instead, went to a secret group at RAF Rudloe Manor in Wiltshire. Yet, despite the evidence, Mr. Pope insists that there is no cover-up in Britain. I am certain that Mr. Pope is not party to one and is not knowingly telling a lie. But, I cannot bring myself to believe that there is none - especially given the close relationship between the U.S. (which seems to follow a strict code of secrecy) and the UK, which would have to agree to follow the same policy if it expected U.S. cooperation and support.
Finally, being objective, Pope broaches the issue no one seems willing to confront. Being a defense analyst, Pope cannot fall in with the "Space Brothers" view of extraterrestrials. He views their deeds objectively, and doesn't like what he sees. They violate our airspace (including restricted military airspace) without our permission. They can, at least at times, completely evade detection by our air defense radar systems. They land on our sovereign territory and proceed to kidnap our citizens and subject them to "medical examinations" that only Dr. Mengele could appreciate. And, last but not least, they kill and mutilate our farm animals and pets in an especially gruesome manner. If people from another nation on earth did all this, we would treat it as an act of war. And so, being logical (another extraordinary trait in a Civil Servant), Pope draws the appropriate conclusion: we are at war right now. According to Pope, it's currently a very secret and quite one-sided war. It's one-sided because we don't seem to know that we are at war. Pope advocates the development of appropriate military contingency plans for use if and when we can't make the Aliens stop these practices by any other means. What's extraordinary about this is that Pope is, again, the first high-ranking Civil Servant I have ever heard draw the logical conclusion regarding the objective implications of Alien activities on this planet, and do so publicly. This conclusion will come as a shock to those who have heard nothing but the apologists for the Aliens, but it's about time they woke up.

People from New York are crazy anyway...
By A Customer
Despite what some people would like you to believe, Nick Pope's book, Open Skies, Closed Minds is obviously one of the best UFO and paranormal activity books ever written. It presents his years of research in a clear and analytical way that is easy to understand and use. Though it is not a story book or a "conspiracy thriller, it reads just as well if not better than most novels I have read. If you're into UFOs and want a good resource book that you will be able to read the whole way through, then Open Skies, Closed Minds if definitely the best book to buy.

Authoritative and well-researched
By Ernest Baltok
Mr. Pope is one of the extremelly well-informed ufologists who spent years on researching, cataloging and assessing extraterrestrial phoenomena.
While working for the British Crown at the Ministry of Defense in England, Mr. Pope examined a considerable number of extraterrestrial occurances that froze the world of ufology. His guest appearences on world television enlightened viewers around the globe.

His candor, honesty and open mind shed lights on areas that were totally ignored by the media and mainstream ufology. Although, Mr. Pope is cautious in his statements and press releases, Mr. Pope always told the truth to the best of his abilities.

This book is a strong example. American readers should look at the UFO phenomena from an European perspective. Sometimes it is quite different and even astonishing.

This book is written to serve this purpose. It is an open invitation to the serious Ufology authors and inquisitive minds. I highly recommend Mr. Pope's present work, a man you can really trust.

Important and Inspiring Ideas, Simply Presented
By Michael Belfiore
This was a powerful little book for me, with big ideas that, now that I've heard them, seem blindingly obvious. But sometimes the obvious needs to be pointed out. Like that fact that many so-called online courses are really just info products in fancy wrappers with inflated price tags and little-to-no teacher engagement.

Iny makes this point, and presents the exciting idea that solopreneurs with niche expertise now have the opportunity to make good livelihoods sharing that expertise through *personal engagement* with small numbers of students—who can provide the feedback needed to engage larger numbers of students.

Even though the book is mostly about ideas, there is some practical advice here: namely that it's best to test these waters in a low-risk, rapid-prototype kind of way that builds momentum. Iny suggests following a simple roadmap that involves quickly sketching out a pilot course and offering it for sale at a discount in order to get feedback and course correct along the way toward a more detailed course and larger business.

These are ideas that need to be heard, both by entrepreneurs, and potential students of online courses.

Creating Effective Online Educational Content
By Gilberto Barria-Vallarino
This short and to the point book provides a powerful concept for the creation of online educational programs. As a consumer of online education, I have to agree with many of Mr. Iny' s observations on the effectiveness of current online educational programs. His observations have made me realize that much of what I've bought is still sitting on a server somewhere. I am even forgetting what is it that I bought and where it is. How come that has come to happen?

if you are planning to create educational content, Mr. Iny's ideas on how to go about creating a pilot program are interesting and worthwhile considering. I am looking forward to applying his ideas to my next project.

Yes, this book is part of a marketing campaign -- but if the book is GOOD, then who cares?
By Chris
Are you now presently or interested in becoming someone who sells courses, information, or education products online?

If so, then Danny Iny is someone you need to be following:

(DISCLAIMER: I am in no way affiliated with Danny Iny, I've never met him, and I've never bought one of his products. I've simply been reading his material for the last year).

Look, there are lots of people who want to sell you products about how to make online courses. That's what Danny does, but what makes him stand out is the absolutely PHENOMENAL amount and quality of information he gives away for free (like this book in the first 3 days of its launch).

I address that commentary specifically to the people who have given 1 star reviews to this book merely because its' a buildup to his Course Builder's Laboratory info-product (or as Danny says in the book, EDUCATION product) he's getting ready to re-launch.

Yes, this book is an "open loop." Danny clearly defined open loops in an email recently. In his own words:
"Reveal the results *and* the methodology behind them, but leave out some key details (e.g. 'I completely cured my back pain by doing X, Y, and Z. But I could have sped up my recovery even more by following this ONE simple tip...')"

Danny does a fantastic job framing the current situation, describing the future market trend, and what we can do to stay ahead of the curve.

What the book is missing is EXACTLY HOW to do that, and for that, he's got a course to sell you, and this book is just the start of building anticipation for it.

But does that mean the book is "bad," or deserves a 1 star review? Of course not! The book should be judged on its merits, and it has plenty. Frankly, Danny is wicked smart and I feel sorry for the people who are too cynical to use the information in a good book just because it happens to be part of a larger marketing strategy.

This book is a must-read for every current or wannabe internet entrepreneur, period. If you don't want to buy his course later, then don't. But don't let that stop you from using good information and your own brain to apply it.

Hosting a good ol' fashion book burning? Start here.
By James Gerhart
I'm a generally a minimalist, but this book is just horrible.

You know those old text books from the 1950s that had no side articles, personal stories, and varied layout to help keep you awake? This book fell into a time machine and somehow landed at the publishing company.

Research shows that modern text book designs are more effective because of the numerous tricks they employ to keep things interesting. A little color here, an amusing photo there, and a side box with an entertaining semi-related story go a long way. Of all topics you'd think a book titled 'Learning' would take that into account, but no sir. Not by a long shot.

This book is 100% black and white print, zero page layout effort was spent on it, and the only diagrams you get are bar graphs and a few drawings of rabbits hooked up to eye blink machines.

And the writing style is straight up cryptic. I'm rather verbally inclined and can run through most textbook chapters (lets say 70-100 pages) for 3000-4000 level courses in an hour or two. With some highlighting and a few notes on the side it takes no other effort to understand or retain the material. But this book is closer to 519 pages of journal articles. To process the material from ~30 page chapters in this book its taking me about 6 hours of reading and 5-6 pages of notes because its horrible inconsistent and frequently uses a tangled web of acronyms. For example, sometimes you'll find the _exact_ same concepts labeled with multiple different bold face vocabulary terms. And I mean super simple concepts like 'lowered pain threshold' having multiple vocabulary terms just 1-2 pages apart. Some of the wording requires making simple flowcharts to understand what the author is attempting to convey.

Perhaps if you're a tenured professor, doctoral candidate, or have lots of experience reviewing journal articles this book will be easier to read and understand. Actually, I worked in 2 experimental psychology research labs and reviewed literature bi-weekly and this book was still difficult to process. This book totally misses its target as undergraduate course material.

In review:

- This book uses _nothing_ but the dreadful black and white linear print pages.
- Does not attempt to break the monotony with any sort of lines, text variations, side stories, or photographs.
- Uses difficult to detangle language. And this is coming from a guy who worked in a psycholinguistics lab for 2 years.
- Yes, this book is $20-40 cheaper than comparable books that have fancier layouts and designs. No, it isn't worth the savings.

If you are a professor investigating this book, the department chair, or even on a committee selecting textbooks for a learning course I plead of you to not subject your students to this book. The professor teaching this course at my university is an excellent instructor, but I am firmly convinced his intention with this book is to push us to the maximum with a difficult book.

Please don't use this book.

Badly outdated and poorly written, with factual errors
By Paul Hudgins
This book truly stands out among all of the bad textbooks I have used.

This is not an advanced book. The concepts are quite simple, but Klein has a talent for explaining simple things in the worst possible way. If you want to see for yourself, check out the diagram explaining discrimination gradients. The book tries to come off as very technical because it contains so many descriptions of research. These are bad explainations and not very instructive at all. Another frustrating point is the use of historical jargon for the sake of jargon. He uses inconsistent terminology and makes no attempt to compare similar terms or integrate similar concepts.

What also amazed me was the list of sources in the back of the book. Most were written between 1920 and 1960. The few that were written in the 80's or later were very trivial studies. If you want to teach a course on the history of the study of learning, this is still a bad book.

Once Klein ventures beyond basic conditioning, he runs into subjects that he apparently just doesn't understand. His definition of "syntax" as a combination of phonology and grammar is a mixture of backwards and plain wrong. Just compare this section to the Wikipedia articles on the same subjects. His explanation of "algorithms" seems like a joke.

Finally, there was the chapter on "concepts." This chapter made me sad. Students are learning from this, you know. Don't look for any discussion of Piaget or schemas here. He begins with a horrible explanation of basic logic, and then goes on to discuss experiments that tested whether animals can tell the difference between different types of objects. It turns out, a pigeon can tell the difference between pictures of water and pictures of things that are not water. It's silly that money was even spent doing this research, and absurd that it was included in a textbook. All animals have to drink. Perhaps this was just included so that he could reference "modern" (meaning 1980's) research in this 2009 edition.

If you are a student, just write down the concepts that the professor mentions and look them up on Wikipedia. Better yet, drop the course and take it later with a professor that can recognize a good book.

If you are a professor, keep in mind that this book will not only fail to give your students much meaningful knowledge, it will also completely turn them off to an important field of study.

Missing important features that should be in a textbook.
By Benjamin I. Gearheard
This review covers the 5th edition.

At first sight, this textbook seemed daunting. There are no friendly pictures in this book, just some charts. It is mainly plain text, and it is entirely black and white. Be warned, this thing has the not quite so great effect of making the reader go cross eyed (figuratively speaking). This serves to make the book very substantive, because not much space is wasted on distracting pictures. However, it does have hundreds of charts/graphs and has some helpful tables. The bland text is boring! Also, the book is missing some things- such as when you see a word bolded in the text, you would expect to find in the margin some kind of definition, correct? Well, in this book- there are no definitions in the margin. No notes that point forward or backward. And it is true that there are different terms introduced for the exact same concept at different times in the text- how is the student to know which they should focus on?

The most helpful part of the layout I found while reading the chapters is that there are regular stopping points, where the author repeats in bulleted format some main points of what you just read (or in my case, thought I had read). There are also some questions to test your learning- so that makes reading the text a bit more active, helps retention.

Professors be warned, this text isn't that friendly- the tone and structure makes it feel somewhat like a psych literature review, and not a friendly format for the unfamiliar student.

Prevail: The Inspiring Story of Ethiopia's Victory over Mussolini's Invasion, 1935-1941, by Jeff Pearce

It was the war that changed everything, and yet it’s been mostly forgotten: in 1935, Italy invaded Ethiopia. It dominated newspaper headlines and newsreels. It inspired mass marches in Harlem, a play on Broadway, and independence movements in Africa. As the British Navy sailed into the Mediterranean for a white-knuckle showdown with Italian ships, riots broke out in major cities all over the United States.

Italian planes dropped poison gas on Ethiopian troops, bombed Red Cross hospitals, and committed atrocities that were never deemed worthy of a war crimes tribunal. But unlike the many other depressing tales of Africa that crowd book shelves, this is a gripping thriller, a rousing tale of real-life heroism in which the Ethiopians come back from near destruction and win.

Tunnelling through archive records, tracking down survivors still alive today, and uncovering never-before-seen photos, Jeff Pearce recreates a remarkable era and reveals astonishing new findings. He shows how the British Foreign Office abandoned the Ethiopians to their fate, while Franklin Roosevelt had an ambitious peace plan that could have changed the course of world history—had Chamberlain not blocked him with his policy on Ethiopia. And Pearce shows how modern propaganda techniques, the post-war African world, and modern peace movements all were influenced by this crucial conflict—a war in Africa that truly changed the world.

Review
Pearce’s Prevail is spellbinding reading. A historical account that is both well-researched and fluid in its writing. Pearce has done justice to this moment in Ethiopian history. A worthy and necessary addition to the growing literature about this period. ―Maaza Mengiste, author of Beneath the Lion’s Gaze

“Jeff Pearce has written, with validated accuracy, a great study on the Italo-Ethiopian War and its impact. In Prevail he has presented an enthusiastically readable work…The reader will meet the exceedingly brave Ethiopian people and their leader, Haile Selassie as they, abandoned by the world, resist invasion by the most powerful military force at the time. Presented in Prevail is a piece of history too long ignored if not forgotten.” --Thomas E. Simmons, award-winning author of The Man Called Brown Condor

About the Author
Jeff Pearce has traveled far to get his unique stories. For his landmark history, Prevail, he tracked down survivors from the Italian-Ethiopian War of the 1930s and 40s, and he uncovered shocking records about Britain's role during the conflict in London archives. For the book he's currently working on, he went all the way to Iraq to interview Kurdish defence forces -- less than two kilometres away from a town controlled by ISIS. And in 2005, he briefly taught journalism in Burma.

His book of investigative journalism, Gangs in Canada, has been adopted as a textbook for criminology, and his history of sex in Canada, How to Make Love in a Canoe, has been adapted into a hilarious stage adaptation by the University of Toronto's Theatre Erindale. In 2007, he wrote his stage play, Defenders of Gravity, which was chosen by a professional panel to inaugurate the Playwrights of Spring Festival in Toronto. Harper Voyager reissued his popular SF thriller, The Karma Booth, and his other science fiction and fantasy works have earned critical praise from indie reviewers as well as a loyal following.

Richard Pankhurst has a doctorate in economic history from the London School of Economics. In 1962, he was the founding director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at the University College of Addis Ababa, and, in 2004, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to Ethiopian studies. He lives in Addis Ababa.

Superb

This book is simply the best book ever written on this specific subject. The author has done his homework to come up with this masterpiece. You have done Ethiopians a justice while reminding the West and the powerful to do what is right or suffer the consequences of injustice. One can learn easily how Ethiopia's case could have saved the world from the atrocities of the World War II just by the simple task of honoring the principles of the ill fated League of Nations. HaileSillasie's speech at the League was indeed a prophetic one "Today its us, tomorrow its you". Thank God for creating Karma.

'Now, you're sure you're going to be okay here on your own?'

'Grace, will you stop worrying and just get in your car and drive!' Her sister, Beth, shot her an affectionate but impatient glance. 'I'm twenty-three years old, not three, and perfectly capable of living on my own. Besides, we need the money…'

Yes, they did, Grace acknowledged, only too well aware that the bills, which had accumulated during the last six months of their mother's illness—when Grace had had to give up her job as pastry chef in one of London's leading hotels so that she might stay with their mother constantly, and so allowing Beth to finish her Master's degree at Oxford University—were still waiting to be paid.

Admittedly Beth had now moved back to the family home, and had a job in London working at a reputable publishing company, but there was no way that her wage alone could support the two of them and pay those accumulated bills.

Which was why Grace was now on her way to the wilds of Hampshire for the trial period of one month, with a view to becoming the permanent cook/housekeeper at the English home of a mega-rich Argentinian businessman. Presumably, as Grace would be based in Hampshire, Cesar Navarro employed other permanent cook/housekeepers in the properties he owned in so many other parts of the world…? Although goodness knew what they were supposed to do with themselves when he wasn't in residence!

'I wonder what Cesar Navarro is like in the flesh?' Beth added speculatively, echoing some of Grace's own thoughts.

Grace gave a snort as she looked up from checking the contents of her cavernous shoulder bag. 'I very much doubt I'm going to get the chance to meet the man himself any time soon!'

Her younger sister gave a frown. 'What do you mean?'

Anyone looking at the two of them, Beth, tall, blonde and dark-eyed, and Grace just a little over five feet tall with long dark hair and blue-green eyes, would probably have no problem realising that the two women weren't actually biological sisters.

Grace had been adopted when she was only six weeks old, and had remained an only child until she was eight years old, when her adoptive parents had brought five-year-old Beth home and introduced her as her new sister. It had been love at first sight for the two little girls, and thankfully it had been that love and affection that had supported the two of them after their adoptive father died in a car crash four years ago, which had left their mother paralysed and in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. It had been chest complications brought on by that immobility that had finally killed her two months ago.

Grace gave a rueful grimace. 'According to his London PA, who, as you know, interviewed and employed me—once I had passed the stringent security check, apparently!—I am to make sure breakfast is ready for his man, Raphael, to take up to the dining-room at seven o'clock each morning. Remain out of the main part of the house until after Mr Navarro has left for the day, after which time I'm allowed to clear away and tidy the house—though not his study, apparently, which is totally out of bounds—ready for his return that evening.

'Evenings will follow the same routine—unless Raphael informs me otherwise, dinner is to be ready for serving promptly at eight o'clock. And finally I have to be out of the house by nine o'clock each evening—after which time it's no doubt, party, party, party!'

'Do you really think so?'

'No.' Grace grimaced. 'What I think is that the arrogant Mr Navarro doesn't want to accidentally catch sight or sound of anyone as lowly as the domestic staff!'

Beth gave a chuckle. 'He does sound a little…over the top in regard to his privacy.'

'With his billions he's probably used to getting exactly what he wants when he wants it.' And beggars couldn't be choosers; despite having excellent references from her last employer, Grace had found it difficult to secure another job as a pastry chef in London this past six weeks of looking, most places put off by the fact that she hadn't worked for almost eight months. Out of desperation Grace had finally signed on with an agency, and been offered this month's trial employment—very well-paid trial employment!—at Cesar Navarro's estate in Hampshire.

'Mmm.' Her sister grinned. 'But you do get your own cottage in the grounds of the estate to live in.'

'Just another way of ensuring Mr Navarro's privacy, I expect,' Grace dismissed ruefully.

'Never mind, sis, I'll pop down one weekend and keep you company for a couple of days,' Beth consoled.

'I have a feeling I'm going to need company by that time!' She gave a husky laugh as she gave Beth a final hug before leaving. 'In the meantime, you'll call me on my mobile if you need me…?'

'By the sounds of it you might be the one who needs to call me—often!' Beth gave a rueful shake of her head.

Grace thought over those unusual demands of her future employer as she made the drive down to Hampshire. She had heard of Cesar Navarro, of course—who hadn't heard of the multibillionaire Argentinian businessman, aged in his early thirties, who not only had homes in most of the capitals of the world, but also seemed to own half the businesses in that world? Well…maybe half the world was a slight exaggeration—a quarter was probably more realistic!

His empire included high-tech businesses, extensive media, airlines, property, hotels, vineyards—the man seemed to have a finger in so many pies Grace wondered how he ever found the time to do anything but work.

Maybe he didn't?

Having had to wait a couple of days to hear whether or not she was being offered a second interview—while that security check was being carried out, no doubt!—Grace had gone online and looked up information on the elusive Mr Navarro.

Reclusive probably better described him, she had realised after reading the little information there was available on him; aged thirty-three, the eldest of the two children born to his wealthy and now separated American mother and Argentinian father, he had grown up in his father's country, then gone on to Harvard University before establishing his own business at the age of twenty-three.

A business empire that had now grown to such mega proportions it necessitated Navarro travelling extensively in his private jet or helicopter, and staying exclusively in those private homes he owned all over the world when he did so.

There had been several photographs on the website of when he was younger, revealing him as being a strikingly handsome youth. Even then his face had been all harsh aristocratic angles—piercing dark eyes, high cheekbones, and sculpted lips, with a square jaw and determined chin. But, without exception, every one of those photographs had shown his swarthy face as being grim and unsmiling.

There had been two photographs available of him as an adult, one obviously a posed photograph, and the other taken from a distance as he was stepping from his jet onto a helicopter at some private airfield—and in both he had looked just as strikingly handsome but even grimmer!

He had appeared an inch or two taller than the equally dark-haired man walking beside him across the tarmac, the darkness of his suit emphasising the width of muscled shoulders and a lean body, with overlong and slightly tousled very dark hair—from the wind of the rotor blades of the helicopter?—the harshness of his aristocratically handsome features still dominated by those piercing dark eyes beneath equally dark brows.

Considering his incredible wealth, and those harshly hewn good looks, Grace couldn't understand why her future boss wasn't also the biggest playboy on the planet, photographed with a different beautiful woman on his arm every evening—a woman who would share the privacy of his bed later that night—rather than guarding his private life to the point of obsession in the way that he did.

Unless…

Maybe there was a reason Cesar Navarro had never been photographed with a beautiful woman on his arm? The same reason he kept his private life very private? And maybe that dark-haired man stepping onto the helicopter with him wasn't simply another one of his PAs, as Grace had assumed he must be?

Now wouldn't that be a crying shame: mega-rich, still single in his early thirties, with arrogant good looks enough to make any woman's heart flutter—and all for the private edification of another man!

Grace gave a chuckle at her wayward thoughts, only for that chuckle to slowly fade and be replaced by a frown as, having followed Kevin Maddox's instructions, she now found herself approaching the entrance to the estate where she was to live and work for at least the next month.

Huge wrought-iron gates were set in a surrounding wall that was at least twelve feet high, with two huge men dressed in matching black suits standing either side of them, their hair military-style short, their stances watchful, the expression in their eyes hidden by black reflective sunglasses—and the sun wasn't even shining on this overcast September day!

One of the men approached Grace's car as she braked in the driveway and wound down the window.

'Grace Blake?'

'Er—yes,' she answered uncertainly, relieved that she was expected, considering the level of security, but a little concerned as to the reason for that high security; she had been led to believe, in the telephone conversation she'd had with Kevin Maddox yesterday, that his Argentinian employer wasn't due to arrive in England until some time tomorrow.

The burly security guard gave a terse nod after checking out the back seat behind her. 'If I could just take a look in the boot of your car…?'

'The boot of my car…?'

'If you wouldn't mind.' He stood to one side as Grace got out of the car and opened the boot for him. He insisted on checking the contents of her suitcase, too, before stepping aside to speak softly into the small radio attached to the lapel of his jacket, and seconds later the huge iron gates began to slowly open.

'The first turning to the right will take you to your cottage,' he instructed Grace abruptly before resuming his post beside the now open gates, his stance once again alert and watchful.

Grace edged the car forward until she was on a level with him. 'Er—I was told Mr Navarro wasn't arriving until some time tomorrow?' It would be just her luck to have arrived after her new employer!

His mouth tightened. 'No.'

'Oh.' She gave a puzzled frown. 'Is there usually this much security even when he isn't in residence?'

'Yes.'

'Oh,' Grace murmured again; she couldn't see it but she felt the coolness of the assessing gaze now levelled on her from behind those dark sunglasses. 'Okay. Thanks.'

'First turning on the right,' he repeated tersely, once again facing forward.

Grace's stomach gave a definite dip as she accelerated the car onto the driveway and saw the gates slowly closing behind her in the driving mirror. She felt, if she didn't see, the security cameras she was sure were now levelled on her as she drove slowly down the tree-lined driveway and turned to the right to approach the cottage Kevin had told her was to be her home for the next month, at least.

And Grace, totally used to doing what she wanted when she wanted, was already starting to have serious doubts that she would be able to live in this security prison for longer than that month's trial period.

'I will accept no excuses, Kevin,' Cesar rasped impatiently as he strode forcefully into the cavernous hallway of his English home the next day, a little tired after having worked for the whole of the flight over from Buenos Aires, and in no mood to deal with any setbacks in the deal he had flown to England especially to complete. 'If Drey-fuss does not— What are these?' He came to an abrupt halt beside the table standing in the middle of the hallway.

Kevin winced as he looked at the decorative vase of flowers. 'Er—lilies?'

Cesar's jaw tightened. 'The minute we finish our conversation I want them removed,' he snapped before continuing on down the hallway to his study.

'Of course.' Wisely, the other man didn't so much as question why as he trailed behind him.

Cesar waited until he was seated behind the huge mahogany desk in his study before pinning the younger man with the darkness of his gaze. 'I am sure I have made it more than clear that there are never to be flowers inside the house?'

Kevin grimaced. 'I apologise. I must have omitted to mention that to Miss Blake.'

Cesar arched a dark brow. 'The new housekeeper?' 'Mrs Davis retired—'

'I am well aware of that. I believe I gave her a cheque on her retirement.' The firmness of his mouth quirked derisively.

'Yes, you did,' Kevin confirmed, having been responsible for the delivery of that cheque. 'I obviously sent Miss Blake's file to Raphael for his approval.'

'Obviously.' Cesar nodded tersely. 'You have a copy of that file with you now?'

'Of course.' Kevin opened his briefcase and removed the appropriate file before handing it to him. 'She's a little young but her references were excellent, and as I said, the security check on her panned out.'

Cesar opened the file, his brows rising as he immediately saw Grace Blake's date of birth placing her as being only twenty-six years old. 'A little young…?' He eyed Kevin speculatively.

Kevin looked uncomfortable. 'Her references were excellent.'

'So you said…' Cesar sat back in his chair and regarded the younger man with narrowed eyes. 'Is she also beautiful?'

Kevin flushed. 'If you think for one moment I would let the way she looks influence me—'

'So she is beautiful,' Cesar drawled mockingly. 'She also does not appear to have been employed for the past eight months…?' he added after another glance at the file.

'No. Well. Her mother was very ill, and so she gave up her job to nurse her—'

'I do not believe I asked for details of her private life, Kevin.' A nerve pulsed in the tightness of his jaw.

'I was merely trying to explain— No, of course you didn't.' The other man nodded as Cesar simply continued to look up at him. 'I'll talk to her about the flowers as soon as we've finished here.'

'See that you do.' Cesar's jaw was still tight as he closed the file on Miss Blake with a firm snap before putting it to one side to be read more thoroughly later.

Raphael was still outside bringing himself up to date in regards to the security here, but Cesar had no doubts that when the other man returned he would very quickly ensure that the young and beautiful Miss Blake knew exactly what Cesar would and would not accept from his employees.

Something missing
By VANDA T. JACKSON
I did not feel the love....The novel is in need of a dash of salt. It is not a horrible read, but not really that engaging.

Not finished but annoyed already..
By Melinda Andersen
First up I'll be honest and say I haven't finished this book yet. But I have to have my little rant - if I'm going to pay almost the same price for the Kindle version as the physical book then at the very least it should be transcribed correctly. Every second comma is replaced with an apostrophe. Don't assume that's minor until you try to read it. I'd like to finish this book but at only 10% of the way through and already annoyed enough to write a review I'm betting I won't.

On top of the annoying apostrophe/comma issue is the overuse of exclamation marks. For a writer whose been at it for 178 books you'd think she could use the symbol in the appropriate manner, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that it's a problem in the kindle version. On another note is the hugely long sentences. I'm thinking the editor was distracted when proof reading this one - there is one sentence on the first page that goes for the entire paragraph.

Sloppy editing and a very poor kindle version of this book make it a disappointing read. Too bad if the characters or plot might be worth reading about.

Definitely worth it
By Jude
~4-4.5/5

I don’t even know how to explain my complete adoration of this series.

The artwork is pretty, kind of in an old-school way, and it definitely grows on you.

The characters are amazing. I love the friendship between all six of them, how they’re all there for each other at all times. Their friendship is true and strong. So far the focus has definitely been on Mike and Kuro, but we get enough of the others that it’s easy to grow attached to all of them. And I love that they all live on Gingacho Street Market, working for their parents, so close together. The street market is a very fun setting.

I will admit that this is kind of just a shout out to having this series rescued. Tokyopop closed when barely three volumes were released (and I say barely, because I know volume three is harder to find than the others. I’m surprised I actually found a copy so easily). But there are ten volumes in the series, and I so badly want to see how it ends. I want to see the progression between them all, the heartbreaks and romance and friendships expand. I just want more of this, because it is such a charming and cute series.

There is no high drama, no nasty medical issues - just real life situations laced with temptations and excuses on the road to recovery. A gift to yourself or perhaps an anonymous gift for someone you care about.
